I've had a few co-workers notified that they've gotten into Harvard while at work. They were pretty excited, told us, and we were excited for them. We were definitely invested in their careers and we knew how hard they worked, so we gave a shit.
That's a bit different from issuing a press release on Facebook so that random Joe Blow that you haven't spoken to in five years can know that you're killing it at life.
I don't know why this is the thing I feel so strongly enough about that I've stopped lurking in this thread. It's almost like a gaudy display of new found intellectual and social captial, like buying a giant ugly diamond chain because you just made your first million.
Yeah, yeah, great points and all that, but, really, why do you care? If people want to brag, let them: it doesn't affect your life in the slightest. For most people, getting into Harvard probably requires a great deal of work; it's perfectly natural to rub it in everyone's noses if that hard work pays off, including strangers.
If you continue to brag well into your career, then that's when it becomes obnoxious. Case in point: one lady I worked for carried her "Harvard Law School" coffee mug everywhere and had a picture of her and Obama on her office wall. Jesus, Lady, we get it!
