Do you lovely people know of different (and cheap) options for moving stuff from coast to coast?
I did a brief search but found prices quoted around 3-4k for a company where you fill a "cube" with your stuff and they ship it.

I wouldn't need to move much to Stanford, obviously, but definitely clothes, kitchen stuff (dishes, pots, etc), my mattress, and probably a few other things.

A cross country trip with a uhaul truck does not sound like much fun, and it's pretty expensive.

Or is it just better to buy everything again?

If all you're bringing is really kitchen stuff and clothes, you ought to just ship it (FedEx or UPS—SLS will give you information on both of those options, including whether or not the local offices will hold your stuff for free if it beats you out here). I would re-buy the mattress out here—there's no reason to pay hundreds of dollars for a cube or a truck if you're not bringing furniture.

For what it's worth, I drove a truck out here (I was bringing furniture). Budget ended up being the best deal by far.

FYI just got my aid letter. SLS will cost me $7k more than Harvard, not explained by COL differences. That, plus moving costs and increased travel costs to see my family is probably more like 10k difference.

Random/shallow question: at ASW, do we get a discount at the bookstore? I know they do this at Harvard's ASW.

im really confused by my aid package.

why does it say i have to pay 25K myself "student contribution" - can't i take this out in gradplus loans? and where are the grants listed, i dont see them anywhere in the calculation.

What're the nicest clothes that people are bringing to ASW? No jacket/tie right? Also, depending on when people are arriving at SFO we could coordinate to split shuttle rides or whatever, that was pretty expensive when I was out at Stanford earlier in the year. Or is anyone getting a rental car? And when are people leaving? I have a Sunday afternoon flight but sort of want to change it to Monday morning it looks like the programming goes straight through Sunday.

Definitely change it. Plus, then you'd get to sit it on a class and complete the SLS experience! I wasn't even planning on bringing slacks. The most formal I was thinking was jeans and a polo... But I've been wrong before

Hey sorry guys - I just wanted to confirm a few things.

(1) - For those of you that received aid from Stanford - did it just show up in the second box of the second page along with Perkins/Stafford/Grad loans? I just want to make sure I am not missing anything.

(2) - Also, regarding the student contribution, does anybody know if SLS will give us grad plus loans to cover that?

(3) - Lastly, does anybody know why COL at SLS is so much higher than every other school? If you take COA and take out tuition its over 30K a year, even Columbia's is in the mid 20's and theres no way Palo Alto is more expensive than Manhattan...anybody else notice this?

At Harvard ASW a tie would be completely out of place. I went with the generic plaid shirt/dark jeans and that seemed pretty typical.

Az - they will give you loans for the student part, but I do not believe its LRAP eligible. For COA differences, just look at how they add up to get the $83K... Ad then realize that the more loans you take, the higher the interest portion of COA will be. I imagine its a combo of this interest and of the school's estimate non-tuition expenses....

Am I absolutely crazy to think that Stanford is a better choice for policy-related/DC law/litigation in DC that involves the fedgov than Harvard? I know it's a broad area but I'm a 0L and don't know what I'll actually end up doing. Does anyone want to tell me I'm stupid, or right or, have any thoughts on this choice?

I'm not sure I agree with this. SLS has an edge for clerkship placement, but I think when it comes to DC jobs Harvard's much larger network actually gives it a bigger advantage. Even adjusted for size, I think HLS dominates SLS at the prestigious DC firms, and in government policy jobs.
