I received my waitlist notification in the mail yesterday (no snail mail) and it was dated February 4th. I live in Orange County so I may have received my letter earlier than others.CO2016YEAH wrote:Sorry to hear about the WLs and ding. How are they notifying?

Welp, lo and behold there was a letter from UCI in the mailbox today. It consisted of my being denied to UCI. It's amazing how quickly the word "regrettably" can jump out at you when opening such a document. Oh well; short of good money I probably wasn't going anyhow.CO2016YEAH wrote:Hmmm... I'm in L.A. I find it amazing how there can be so much excitement and hate for UCI at the same time.dmgoor01 wrote:WL'ed today =( Really sucks cause my girlfriend lives nearby and I want to be close to her, plus I love the vibe of Irvine
If you read the choosing a law school forum you see so many actives threads about why you should never go to UCI combined with so much excitement about the school here.

There were similar voices 4 years ago saying similar things -- i.e., "you'd have to be an idiot to go to UCI, scholarship or no scholarship." I quickly learned that the fact that I made a rational conclusion that UCI was the right choice for me was worthless on TLS, because they weren't interested in having a rational discussion. At that point, I left the boards, having made my choice.
Today, their story goes "the UCI inaugurals don't have jobs, and even if you can prove that they do have jobs, that's because they received an unsustainable amount of help with landing jobs." They make "arguments" based on conclusions, but they couch them in the tone of an authority figure so it's easy to forget that their posts are merely conjecture, tinted by a negative point of view.
It's the downside of TLS -- of the internet as a whole. Trolls are trolls, wherever you go. Even the ones who think they're going to be lawyers someday.

I didn't get in, so I have no vested interest. But I do think both sides to the argument have valid points.CAteacherguy wrote:I was just thinking the same thing and trying to come up with a theory to explain it... but I've got nothin'JayJones78 wrote: I find it amazing how there can be so much excitement and hate for UCI at the same time.

It is a new school, not yet ranked, with provisional accreditation and an incidentally small alumni network. In addition to that, it is in the over-saturated California market, and the establishment of a new school amongst so many preexisting schools pumping out too many new attorneys has raised eyebrows and led to some resentment. Being a new school in such a saturated market also breeds fear and skepticism; some people will simply feel more comfortable going to a school with a more established history. Furthermore, and take this with a grain of salt, the UCs aren't particularly known for dishing out a ton of cash; this perception could fuel some of the deterrence.
On the other side of the coin, it is part of one of the higher-end UCs, it has a notable dean with a vast track record who has been part of the faculty of several leading law schools, most of the faculty have been trained at leading institutions and have taught at other outstanding schools, recent grads have (apparently) had relatively solid job placements despite the current market, and it is in Orange County. While the location might not be a draw for some folks, it is a very pretty area with excellent weather virtually all year, and it's close to the (albeit over-saturated) LA market. Cost of living in OC is also comparatively inexpensive, in relation to the areas where some of the other leading schools in the state are located.
I'm not knocking it; if I could have scored a bit of a tuition reduction I probably would have jumped on it. But I do think the points that are used to argue against the school are not entirely discountable. Are they given too much clout? Probably. But different folks have different opinions, perceptions, preferences, and aversion to risk/newness/etc.
Having said that, the previous poster raises pertinent points re: trolls being trolls...negativity...etc. As with most things in life, opinions on law schools seem to fall at one of the two far ends of a spectrum, with the truth laying somewhere in between.

Re: UC Irvine c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
For what is worth: I'm currently working pro bono with an attorney at a major firm. The client we were waiting for was late, so we made small talk about law school. Somehow we got on the subject of the bar and UCI's inaugural class. He flat out said: "We handed out so many offers to UCI students, but no one decided to come work for us." Some people can frame this however they want- but when he said that, it made me realize that our grads didn't have problems getting offers; at least not from this firm. Keep in mind he didn't say "an offer," "a couple of offers," or "a handful of offers."
But I agree- so many people on TLS will give you all these reasons not to go to UCI. I'm happy I went. I certainly didn't have any trouble getting offers this summer (for internships). But obviously, that doesn't mean that everyone else's experience is the same as mine.

Got my waitlist letter today, and I live on the east coast. Surprised I was even waitlisted (I am 12 points below the median LSAT). Good luck to everyone else!

Just wondering: does UCI contact applicants through snail mail only or do they sent acceptances/rejections/WL over email too?cnk wrote:Got my waitlist letter today, and I live on the east coast. Surprised I was even waitlisted (I am 12 points below the median LSAT). Good luck to everyone else!

Re: UC Irvine c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
While all of that is true, I personally question the value in the latter, since it depends on the school. Hastings has been around for a long time, with thousands of grads, but its alumni network is not considered that great. In comparison, schools like USC and Notre Dame have extremely loyal alums (undergrad and grad -- you join the Trojan or Domer family). Plus, what good is the alumni group if only <20% of its grads get Big Law jobs? (The rest aren't in much of a place to help a 3L.)It is a new school, not yet ranked, with provisional accreditation and an incidentally small alumni network.
Personally, I'd rather have some named faculty making calls on behalf of my first job. But others on TLS will vehemently disagree.

from this thread it looks like acceptances were sent over e-mail (then packets via snail mail) and WL/rejections via snail mail. I never received anything other than the "your application is complete" e-mail back in December.
