Don't worry too much - everyone goes NDR before a decision. No way to know the length of the NDR unfortunately. Could be 2 days, could be 2 months.zniha wrote:Joined the NDR party yesterday. Dang.

Grab something to drink and enjoy...could be a while.
BTW...i heard from a friend in admissions that they are moving really slow this year for some reason. If you are NDR vs waitlisted, you are in a better position.

Is this a credible source? Also, has UF even waitlisted people yet?Kajual wrote:zniha wrote:Joined the NDR party yesterday. Dang.

For the people who have received scholarship offers - how long was it between receiving the acceptance and the offer?

Yeah, that's what I have heard from almost every admitted and attending UF law student but I just want to know either way.Spikedude wrote:Don't expect a big scholarship offer though, it was pretty weak compared to the amount of money I was offered by other schools.

Re: UF Class of 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
Anyone tried negotiating a scholarship with UF and succeeded? I could use some advice for sure. I'm in-state tuition, was accepted last week and will wait another 1-2 weeks to see if any mention of a scholarship. If not, I'd like to attempt and negotiate. I was offered 25k/yr at UM and would have no living expenses in Miami which means if I attended UM and kept my scholarship my total debt would be like 50-60k. On that basis I would like to try and negotiate 5-7k/yr from UF

How difficult is it to achieve residency after your L1? For what it's worth, my parents already own a house in Florida and are slowly retiring down there, but could expedite that process if $40k+ is on the line. I'm prepared to sever any other ties with my current state ASAP.

Re: UF Class of 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
You can't compare the schools based on the scholarship amount. You have to do so based on total CoA. I was offered much more money at Miami and it still would have been almost 100k more to attend than UF.Spikedude wrote:Don't expect a big scholarship offer though, it was pretty weak compared to the amount of money I was offered by other schools.

+1 Someone should do a CoL comparison for Florida and Miami. From what I've seen, the cheapest apartment near Coral Gables is around 850. Along with gas (+traffic), parking, and all the other expenses one incurs while living in a city like Miami.
I don't mean to make this into a UF/Miami board, but I suspect this is a decision that many applicants will end up making.

I don't think it's a big deal, you're right, a ton of people face this decision. I believe there are basic CoL estimations on lawschooltransparency.comAroldis105 wrote:+1 Someone should do a CoL comparison for Florida and Miami. Re: UF Class of 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
LST is currently down (at least it is for me). However, I found another website which offers CoL estimates and other useful data. DISCLOSER: I can not speak to the veracity of these numbers.
--LinkRemoved--
UF comes in at a CoL of $12,730
Miami is estimated to be $16,820
Based on these numbers, it looks like they may be using a model not too different than this:
UF: Apartment ($600) x 12 = 7,200 + 5,530 (additional costs) = 12,730
Miami: Apartment (900) x 12 = 10,800 + 6,020 (additional costs) = 16,820
Based on a brief analysis these numbers look fairly accurate. If I was pressed for accuracy I would think Miami's number would be around 17,000 and Florida's could be much closer to 12,000. Obviously you need to factor in your own preferences for comfort and living, but I think it's safe to say that living in Miami could easily cost 4,000+ more a year than Gainesville.

Looks pretty accurate, I think it would be easier to lower that cost at Gainesville if you really wanted to. I've heard of people grabbing roommates for around $400. Miami is just expensive as hell regardless.Aroldis105 wrote:UF comes in at a CoL of $12,730

If you want to work in Florida, only the Florida schools would be good for you. Unless you jump into T-14 or Georgia it won't translate well to FL.Spikedude wrote:Regardless of total COA, UF schollys aren't great.
Below are the scholarship offers I have received as an FL resident (schools are listed from lowest to highest ranking)
UM: 75k 3.2 stip (only 30% of the class maintains a 3.2 or higher, ridiculous stip)
FSU: 45k
UF: 36k
Fordham: 45k
W&L: 120k, 3.25 stip (60% of the class maintains a 3.25 or higher)
GW: 75k
UMN: 90k 2.5 stip (you have to be in like the bottom 10% to lose your scholly, awesome)
Conclusion? Make sure you apply to more than just UF and other FL schools.
*I have not attempted to negotiate higher scholarship offers from any of these schools, there is potential for increase.
UF tuition over 3 yrs is 55k and UM is 120k per year so you're getting a better deal at a better school with a lower CoL. Congrats on all the offers.

I'll take it. I find it weird that there's no waitlists on LSN or and TLS yet, though.Kajual wrote:slawww wrote:Is this a credible source? Also, has UF even waitlisted people yet?Kajual wrote:zniha wrote:Joined the NDR party yesterday. Dang.

Re: UF Class of 2016 Applicants (2012-2013 cycle)
You can definitely find apartments in Gainesville for $300+. I lived there for almost 3 years. My rent in a 4/4 was $449 but I have a friend who rented a condo with some friends and she payed $340 a month and all of her utilities were included. My $449 also included cable and utilities. Personally if I attend I'll be in a 1 bedroom somewhere but the COL in Gainesville is ridiculously cheap unless you're looking for a luxury apartment (which still are cheaper than apartments in Miami).
UF actually increased my scholarship to 48k so it looks like I'll probably be attending. Not sure yet though. I'm waiting on the financial aid award that they send out which tells you how much you'll be receiving according to scholarship, need based aid and loans. I was told by the financial aid director that you could receive up to $15k in need based aid but only for the first year (you probably have to renew each year).
