Ah, crap that is the same time as when most of the TLS crew is going to Cornell's ASW. They have another in April, so I might have to switch datesColtsFan88 wrote:March 29-30 (thr and fri). I'll be there.msblaw89 wrote:When is the exact date in March again?

Re: In at GULC!
Speaking of this, are you guys starting with scholarship negotiations? I don't think they'll be rolling out the red carpet for me or anything, but if I could even manage 10k/year it would probably tip the scales to GULC. I have $72k to William & Mary, think that will mean anything to them?msblaw89 wrote:just submitted my FAFSA....hoping GULC gives me something ...anything really

Yeah, all I have is 28.5k at texas... and I don't think that will really get much of anything... Maybe BU will throw me enough to wave in GT's face=\cogitoergosum wrote:Speaking of this, are you guys starting with scholarship negotiations? Re: In at GULC!
Re: scholarship negotiation, I am probably not going to mention any more than 1 school to set the situation that at the moment it is either GULC or, in my case, UMINN. U Minn offering 23k/yr would leave me with 70k or so in debt vice double that for GULC. Yeah, they arent peer schools, but I think framing it in the context of, this is where I am at, I want GULC more than anything but I hesitate to take on that much debt if only to pursue x career (something not biglaw and not LRAPable) and spend a decade paying off student loans. I would also definitely mention, as I specifically will, that since I am marrier and the wife and I are considering kids, the debt is much more than just what I need to consider for student loans.
Hope it works for me! I just think it sounds better than "I got $ from school X and $$$ from school Y and $$$$$ from school Z, whats your guys offer?"

Okay, I'm getting shit on another thread. Would you all attend GULC over WUSTL even if it was at sticker?

Yes it does. It means you have to think of the big picture here. Okay I am putting this to rest now. Avg starting salary for GULC is 160,000 adjust for taxes and you get 112,000. WUSTL avg starting salary is 95,000 adjust for taxes and you get 66,500. For GULC you start at -200,000, but after 10 years your PROFIT is 920,000 vs. WUSTL of 665,000 with no debt. If I didn't have a solid personal reason to be at WUSTL, I'd pick GULC in a heartbeat.

Edit: Also, might I add, if you actually meant WUSTL at sticker over GULC at sticker, well that's a no-brainer. My whole analysis is re: the prospects of a sizeable sum from WUSTL.Campagnolo wrote:Questionable.msblaw89 wrote:Yes it does. It means you have to think of the big picture here. Agreed with Campagnolo. I assume you mean GULC @ sticker over WUSTL w/scholarship, but even so, I think it's such a personal decision. I'm really hoping, (and by hoping I mean holding ritualistic sacrifices everyday until the first GULC scholarship email is sighted in the hopes) that they'll give me some money and make my decision that much easier, but I'm having a hard time turning away from the 120k that WUSTL offered me. Thursday night I was pretty much set on going to GULC or GW (I'd honestly forgotten about WUSTL), even booked a flight for DC the weekend before my spring break lol. But after getting the scholarship email from WUSTL, I'm not so sure. Though the job prospects for GULC are certainly something worth considering, as someone who isn't totally sure about going into biglaw in NY (I'm a Florida boy at heart), I just don't know if I want to "trap" myself in such a demanding work environment: or for that matter, not even sure about trapping myself in the NE which I might have to in order to pay back the MASSIVE debt I'd accrue going to GULC at sticker.
But yeah. To each his/her own, as I said. If your heart is set on being in NY and working 80+ hr weeks, which PLENTY of TLSers are, then GULC could definitely be the better option.
Also, re: your numbers, aside from the problem with using medians (I'm more of an "assume the worst and hope for the best" sort of guy myself) you gotta keep in mind how much of your debt you're going to pay off per year and how much interest is going to accrue over that time span. Because face it, if you're a big-shot lawyer making 160k a year, you're probably gonna want a decent-to-fancy car, a pretty nice place, an awesome wardrobe, etc. And then there's INSURANCE and god forbid you get into a car accident in your fancy new car, blah blah blah. Bottom-line: Your numbers are just a little too optimistic for my taste. So yeah, I think that might be why people are a little less than enthusiastic to accept your statistics as valid. I have a feeling most future-lawyers are more likely to be pessimists rather than optimists

One of my favorite quotes (told to me by a professor about a year ago), went something like, "If there are two things that can ruin or drastically alter a person's life, they are debt and children." Could you imagine if you graduated from GULC and accidentally wound up with both?

Yea, you are right there are many other factors on both sides of the equation. Re: In at GULC!
I totally feel you on that. And as shallow as it might make me sound, I'd rather tell my friends I'm going to Georgetown than to tell them that I'm going to Washington University in St Louis, Missouri. Not to mention a degree from GULC would give me a much easier time with finding a job in So Fla. But after talking to my parents to whom I made the mistake of mentioning my scholarship at WUSTL and who can't quite fathom why I'd even consider going to GULC without a scholarship, I realized maybe I should look at this more rationally and debt-adversely. Especially when reminded that they think/(know) that I'm bad with moneymsblaw89 wrote:

Re: In at GULC!
For those that attended ASW, did you get a tour of Gewirz. I know there are other threads on this, but wanted to get prospective students takes. Being two years removed form undergrad I am a little hesitant to be reinserted into student housing, now living room etc. How was the common space in most setups. Also, what do others think, is it even resonable to think that you could find something in Logan Circle or Dupont and not completely break the bank.

Re: In at GULC!
Questions for admitted students...can I get a general consensus here? I posted earlier that I submitted 1/9, first complete 1/12, then 1/30, 2/8, 2/9, 2/13. My Program Time updated from Both to Full Time on 2/8. My address updated 2/9. I was hoping that some good news was in the mail after my 2/9 update from what I had been told. What should I be expecting? Any words of wisdom?
Thanks guys!
