No, you're right. It's definitely NOT the case that law schools *have* to admit some African Americans; in fact, it's been illegal to require any such thing since Bakke in 1987; Grutter (2003) simply reaffirmed that decision and defined diversity in admissions as the kind of compelling state interest that would allow race to be used as a "plus factor" in admissions as long as it was one of several factors used to evaluate individual candidates (in Gratz, heard at the same time, the court held that even a system that quantified that "plus factor" as points, as Michigan did for undergraduate admissions, amounted to a de facto quota and was unconstitutional under Bakke). Also, considering race in admissions isn't really designed to "help out" URM candidates; Grutter clarified that the "compelling interest" at stake here was the educational value of diversity for ALL students, not the redressing of historical wrongs for select groups.xlawschoolhopefulx wrote:Hm. Wouldn't this kind of policy towards African Americans (ie making one an auto-admit) violate the Supreme Court's decision in Grutter? The court said it can favor URMs, but only if race is not the only factor in admission. If at least one African American is automatically admitted, that seems to presume that race was the only factor in their admission. But, I could be wrong.hypothalamus wrote:Also, URM is a legally defined category when it comes to law school admissions. Law schools *have* to admit some African Americans, for example. If there is only one such applicant to NYU this year, NYU has to admit them, irrespective of their scores (more or less). If there is one African-born and raised candidate, NYU has no obligation to admit them whatsoever. The whole point of the URM clause is to help out US populations that have historically been underrepresented, so that they are not underrepresented in the future.

The diversity mandate is an ABA one, not a legal one IIRC.

Re: NYU Class of 2015 Applicants
This is true, IIRC. The ABA establishes who is a URM, and asserts that it wants the proportions of groups (AA, MA, PR, NA etc) practicing law to match those of the general population. This is why Cuban Americans are my URM--their relative status and wealth in the American Hispanic community excludes this from this classification.KevinP wrote:The diversity mandate is an ABA one, not a legal one IIRC.

I mean, were you held/WLd before you sent your LOCI? I applied 6 weeks ago, I'm not sure if it's appropriate to send anything. I didn't write a Why essay though so I think maybe I should

good. I had my mom proof read my shit (nerd) before I sent it out, and she said maybe I should say... "even though I got into michigan, I'm holding out for NYU..." I didn't really agree/feel like i should.. but I'm at the point in my life where I can't breathe without checking with tls

Re: NYU Class of 2015 Applicants
to me it seems immature. almost seems like... trying to make a boy/girl jealous by flirting with their hot friend in front of them... when you have no idea if that boy/girl even likes you at all!! bad example, but you get my point... NYU shouldn't/ probably doesn't care where else you got in. I think people more often use other schools for scholarship leverage once they get admitted (at that point, people know for sure that the school at least wants/approves of them!)... not for boosting admissions chances.. just be sincere and make it about NYU and only NYU.avd90 wrote:PopTorts13 wrote:+1Killingly wrote:I wouldn't.avd90 wrote:hey guys, so is it a good idea to mention I've been accepted to michigan in a LOCI?

oh... BUT, you could convey the same idea more tactfully by saying that if admitted, you would pull your applications from other schools and choose to attend NYU? (without mentioning a specific school)

not stupid, I had some issues with it. I sent mine to Candace Wade <WadeC@exchange.law.nyu.edu> (because that was who sent my grade request) and law.moreinfo@nyu.edu
