Re: SMU 2010!
haha i don't know but you should look into it.
regarding hornbooks, e&e's, LEEWS, etc, what do yall seriously think about all of this. It's so hard to get opinions online because everything is so conflicting. I've read a few times that strict focused exam prep (skipping briefs, relying more on hornbooks and e&e's) is an effective way to save time and outperform. However that all sounds incredibly risky and as though it may only work for some. I didn't even know what a hornbook was until recently.
How/when do you know which hornbooks, E&E's to purchase, and is LEEWS just a corner-cutting gimmick?
Sorry if many of these questions have already been answered in this thread.

ID's get you in to gamesSpencerPratt wrote:Haven't seen much about that I don't think. We're supposed to be pretty good, right? I come from college basketball territory.
Team is mediocre, but have a legitimate shot at a run for the Conference USA title for the first time in a very long time.
09/05/10: AT TX Tech (Likely loss, but ripe for an upset)
09/11/10: vs UA-Birmingham (Likely win)
09/18/10: vs Washington State (Likely win)
09/24/10: vs TCU (Rival game - Likely ass-whoopin' by a top 10 team)
10/02/10: AT Rice (Likely win)
10/09/10: vs Tulsa (Tough game - tossup)
10/16/10: AT Navy (Tough game - tossup, but non-conference)
10/23/10: vs Houston (Leans loss - Most important game all season - should be good)
10/30/10: AT Tulane (Leans win)
11/06/10: AT UTEP (Leans win, also a tougher of the conference games, though)
11/20/10: vs Marshall (Leans win, but lost last year)
11/26/10: AT East Carolina (ECU is likely to be the east division champ. SMU will be competing with UH, Tulsa, & UTEP for western division champ - so this game could be played again the next week as the conference championship - tossup)
Don't worry, though -- the LS tailgates (called "boulevarding") are awesome (free beer). Game attendance is optional (most go to a bar to watch their superior (UT), or wanna-be superior (TX A&M) undergrad football team)

No -- it will get done. Returning students haven't even received financial aid notifications yet (this week, supposedly). Financial aid and the LS registrar's offices are INCREDIBLY SLOW. The sooner you accept this, the better off your time at SMU will be. Great people, they just don't get in a hurry.kalvano wrote:It's been over a week since I did my counseling and accepted my loans. I got a letter from Direct PLUS saying my credit was okey-dokey, but no certification yet from SMU. So should I be all up in SMU's business?

FWIW I still haven't received access to my award letters, so you're ahead of me.

Me either. I called Friday, and they said that they are busy processing everything. They confirmed that they received my FAFSA, and advised me to periodically check my e-mail for notification that the award letters are ready.SpencerPratt wrote:FWIW I still haven't received access to my award letters, so you're ahead of me.

I just find it amusing. They are pretty quick about everything else, so it's odd that the one office is so slow.
Back to reading hornbooks. God, you losers are so behind me.

Well, I have certification notes next to my Stafford loans when I view my financial aid, but nothing next to PLUS.
That's what is irking me.

Does anyone remember when we can expect to get our section assignments? I assume this is also when we will get our book lists. I noticed an unrelated thread on TLS about people already buying their books on Amazon b/c they have their book lists now. When will we have ours?

Re: SMU 2010!
If I remember correctly, we received section info roughly the last week of July/first week of August. Someone (betasteve, perhaps??) can correct me if I'm off.andreafitz1981 wrote:Does anyone remember when we can expect to get our section assignments? I ordered some books off Half.com about a week after we received assignments, and two of them didn't arrive in time. However, I didn't use expedited shipping, so if you go that route, spring for faster shipping than media mail. Also got books off Amazon and they were here well before classes started.
The bookstore is also not too bad. If you go early enough, they will typically have some really clean used copies. Don't wait until the last few days before class, though, because if you book brief like I do, the over-marked used copies that will be left will not work and you'll end up buying new.

I was just coming in here to make this exact post, but you beat me to it! Obviously a great deal, i've been using prime for almost two years now and will attest to its value. I was able to sign up with my smu email address and since i already have a prime account, my credit card was refunded the pro-rated balance for the months left on my subscription.

Does anyone recommend a certain electrical company for Uptown? I'm looking at the Powertochoose.com site and it's a little overwhelming. I kind of like the fixed rate idea but would like feedback.
Thanks.
Thanks.

It all comes from the same electrical lines.

Do the rates change a significant amount month to month? There are some companies whose variable rates are only 8.3 but it seems too good to be true.

The low ones like that probably require a long contract.
I always liked TXU's average billing. Same amount every month. You overpay in the winter, but underpay in the summer.

Re: SMU 2010!
The power companies are pushing fixed rates right now because natural gas is going down in price. When natural gas goes up, the power companies push variable rates.tinyone wrote:Does anyone recommend a certain electrical company for Uptown? You want to do the opposite--if you think natural gas will go up, get a fixed rate. If you think it's going down, get a variable. We're all commodities traders now!
Personally, I just pick the lowest variable rate plan with no cancellation fee. When your power company does something that annoys you (and they will, trust me) just switch to someone else.
