Now, of course, the California system is not as awesome as it once was--we can blame Prop 13 for that. But it's still the best in the country.

And which state has a second-best public university equal to UCLA?BenJ wrote:Remind me, which state school is better than Berkeley?D Brooks wrote:ftfy.managamy wrote:California arguably [strike]has[/strike] had the best public-university system in the United States.

It's true about Prop 13, though; we have not only the best public universities but the most dysfunctional political system in the nation. Life would be better if they stayed apart.

BTW, it's comical how this eclectic thread covers Ivies, California schools, state university systems, state political systems, name-changing habits of TLS-ers,...: basically anything and everything except the school for which the thread is named.

Wait so you actually believe that Michigan and UVA are better than Berkeley? And that California doesn't have the best public university system of any state in the U.S.? You actually believe that?D Brooks wrote:No, I just don't think Stanford and Berkeley are the end alls be alls. htfh.
Also, your only argument for placing Stanford and Penn in the same category the other day was USNWR undergrad rankings. My counterargument discussed the irrelevancy of those rankings for undergrad, given some of the criteria used. I'd say your argument was way more simplistic and lacked more support than mine.

We're talking about the best public school system aside from Colorado, right?

But in effect, that would be comparing the entire public university systems of other states against a small fraction of California's public university system. Seems like a weird thing to do when we're comparing the systems as a whole, no?

No rain today, although we've had a lot more than normal this year, thanks to El Nino. It was high 60s and blindingly sunny today.

Before TABOR, our public universities were damn solid. CU, CSU, Mines, and even UCD for certain programs. Fort Lewis educates more AI students than almost any other school in the US, regardless of size.VoidSix wrote:We're talking about the best public school system aside from Colorado, right?
Damn Grover Norquist...I'm really glad my post-grad work experience was to dismantle TABOR.
