My (limited) understanding is that merit based aid comes from being nominated for the few named scholarships. Most people hear about those soon after they are accepted (1-2 weeks). Otherwise, it is all need-based, and they give you an offer in early March.

I hope that's not correct, you would think they give out additional merit aid in unnamed scholarships. Maybe notSmumps wrote:My (limited) understanding is that merit based aid comes from being nominated for the few named scholarships. EDIT: for accidental quote inclusion. Condolences all. Complete 12/01, Submitted 11/18ish... hm, I guess they aren't kidding when they say it can take up to 12 weeks to render decision.

What does the email for "named scholarships" look like?curiouscat wrote:They might do another round of invitations at a later point (I'm not really sure) but I don't think you can negotiate for a named scholarship. You can probably use that leverage to increase a regular scholarship when those come in.planeride wrote:If I'm admitted but haven't heard about financial aid, is it safe to assume I'm not getting invited to one of the named scholarships?
Any chance I could bargain for one (with a significant offer from a peer school?)

This is not even close to true. It comes out in March, but it's merit based. Like most schools Penn claims to consider need, but don't expect to outperform your numbers. The amounts usually cap out at 20k/yr.Smumps wrote:My (limited) understanding is that merit based aid comes from being nominated for the few named scholarships. You'd know if you got one because you'd be invited to write an essay for it. A bunch of them went out a week or so ago for the full rides and half rides.admisionquestion wrote:What does the email for "named scholarships" look like?curiouscat wrote:They might do another round of invitations at a later point (I'm not really sure) but I don't think you can negotiate for a named scholarship. Re: Penn c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
Application went complete several weeks ago and haven't heard back since then. Is it really possible that it may take 5 weeks to even go under review? I applied to UCLA January 31 and heard back last week, so I feel like no news from Penn may be a really bad sign:(
Would it be unreasonable for me to write a LOCI or Why Penn statement before I've been notified that my app is under review?

Some people get invited to apply for a named scholarship (there are several types). A number of people already got an invitation via email a couple of weeks ago. There are also other scholarships that get granted in March/April for which you are considered without a special application. Is there other information you're looking for?admisionquestion wrote:Can someone in the know please clarify the full story on Penn scholarships.

Re: Penn c/o 2015 Applicants (2011-2012 cycle)
A cursory glance through the very earliest stages of this thread will answer your question about the timeline. People who applied in October are still waiting for responses. People who applied long after have been rejected or waitlisted. That you applied to UCLA and received a response in a week is not the norm.Yummybread wrote:I'm curious as well... That you are considering writing an LOCI after being under review around a month is ridiculous. Yes it would be unreasonable for you to do anything at this stage until you hear a response. You applied late in the cycle, are at the very back end of the applicants.

Excellent. Let's keep PopTorts at bay.
For some strange reason he is INCREDIBLY annoying -- and that is for someone who has been admitted to many of the same so called schools he has applied. Is it just me? I don't want to be too harsh on the bloke. But I don't want to passively encourage him either.
Cheers.
