Not that I would have expected it, but no info yet about ASW so for those that have...is there a deadline for registering to attend ASW? I'll have to move quite a few things around at work so just trying to judge if I start that process Monday or if I'm cutting it too close. Thanks!
Thank you! I hope so too!

I interviewed Friday so about a day, however I think mine was more of a formality since I'd already done a campus visit and basically did an interview then. I'm sure you'll hear really soon!

Just got done with the interview. It was very positive! She basically said I was in which is not surprising at all. She also loved my letters of recommendation which is great because I didn't think they were going to be that good! She said I should be getting my acceptance and scholarship info pretty soon.

Cuse or sublime would be better able to answer the first part since they may have lists from last year. Top 1/3rd is necessary but not sufficient for any biglaw really, and you'd be lucky to get chicago or NYC at that point. You really want to be top 10% to be biglaw "secure," and even then you could still screw it up if you're bad at interviewing.buckiguy_sucks wrote:Hey Scotti, LGI, and whoever:
Are there a lot of DC firms at OCI? Does being in the 30% percentile that qualifies you for big law get you big law anywhere or just Chicago/St. Louis/NYC

It looks like Notre Dame places more students into Federal Clerkships, is it that Notre Dame is more highly regarded by federal judges or is it just self selection on behalf of WUSTL students?

Mary Ann Clifford seemed to be impressed with my desire to do one haha, she said not a lot of students at WUSTL consider it.sublime wrote:adil91 wrote:It looks like Notre Dame places more students into Federal Clerkships, is it that Notre Dame is more highly regarded by federal judges or is it just self selection on behalf of WUSTL students?
This is all me guessing/speculation:
It is something WUSTL seems to be trying to raise, but it seems like a lot of people here are more focused on getting into a firm. We don't seem to have established pipelines, and I am sure ND legacy shit/catholicism with conservative judges (see Ave Maria's fedclerk numbers) help. Like I said though, a number of professors, people in CSO have been really trying to push it.
At least for me, personally, it just seems like a huge pain in the ass, for something I would like to do, but would be ok not doing.

Agree with this. There are a lot of factors at OCI other than your grades (e.g. personality, the firm's hiring needs vis-a-vis your stated group of interest, how many slots they have set aside for your particular school, who you meet and who likes you...)sublime wrote:Not many DC firms at OCI but they have two off campus programs where you go there if you get screeners and do it that way.buckiguy_sucks wrote:Hey Scotti, LGI, and whoever:

Top third really doesn't guarantee anything anywhere, although I know people with those grades going to big firms in Chi and NYC, although they both had LR and some ties/did some outside work.
Chicago and DC have reputations for being really difficult to break into and StL firms have a reputation for being insular, and that was my experience with better grades than top third (but no LR).
If you are top third, and want biglaw anywhere, and don't have anything extra, you will have to hustle IME.
ETA: Although anecdotally, it seems that my class (current 2Ls) did well in NYC. And to my knowledge, everybody in the top 10% who wanted biglaw, ended up getting it.
At the end of the day whether a certain class rank is "BigLaw secure" depends on how you're defining BigLaw. There's a great deal of variation even within a single market. If the scope is any law firm that pays you six figure somewhere in the country, then yeah i think top 10% or 20% is probably secure. But once you start narrowing the definition to certain markets or practice strengths or overall quality, then things change. Even the #1 student at WUSTL doesn't have a shot at one of the stronger litigation boutiques or certain NYC firms that just refuse to hire from the school (e.g. Wachtell..Skadden..).
To answer your question directly, I think top third WUSTL without law review and without any ties to the markets you mentioned would (1) almost certainly strike out of St. Louis; (2) might be able to scrape into a weaker Chicago firm if they're very convincing about wanting to stay (which they probably wouldn't be); (3) have a chance at some NYC firms like Kaye Scholer or Seward Kissel
At some point self-selection leads to diminished clerkship placement since alumni play a large role in clerkship hiring. But i don't think WUSTL has ever been good with placing federal clerks, so people don't go for it, so the placement stays bad/gets worse. Dunno about Notre Dame. But i don't think either school places well enough into federal clerkships for you to have any expectations going inadil91 wrote:It looks like Notre Dame places more students into Federal Clerkships, is it that Notre Dame is more highly regarded by federal judges or is it just self selection on behalf of WUSTL students?

Who are the seven ppl who said "yes" to the poll?
i have to call my airline probably sometime this week. first stop: Chicago. Second stop: bloomington! Third stop: STL. Fourth stop: bloomington. Fifth stop: back to the west coast. I'll be the most jet-lagged person on Friday in STL.
