Called Michigan a few weeks ago. They said merit aid recipients are ineligible for need-based aid. If you're getting neither, you should negotiate with money from peer schools. A friend of mine did that last year, and she got an offer within days.ohpobrecito wrote:They originally said I wasn't eligible (which is ridiculous), and I've been talking/sending requested tax returns, scholarship info, etc.

Not sure. When you fill out the questionnaire thing, if they think you're ineligible they give you a comments section to fill out. I heard back a few hours later. (I also did this the minute the questionnaire became available.)francesfarmer wrote:What's the appeal process like? They already have my Need Access form.ohpobrecito wrote:They originally said I wasn't eligible (which is ridiculous), and I've been talking/sending requested tax returns, scholarship info, etc. to the FA Dean since, but she still hasn't had me fill out the Need Access, and it's been like a week since I've heard anything. Which is off putting.

FYI for anyone interested in need based aid. I got my package from Michigan and it's 25 in need based grants a year. The rest in loans. About comparable to most schools besides HYS (way more generous). Good luck everyone!

Mine is an unsubsidized loan and a dean's scholarship, I didn't think there was such a thing as a need based GRANT, grants are scholarships, right? hm, if they're offering need based grants I'm wondering why I didn't get in on that, my parents and I are all below poverty level.

Would you rather 20K merit and 4K need or 25K merit and disqualified for need?
I realize everyone wants to double dip we can't all have our cake and eat it too. Tons of us are "needy" at the very least because we have crappy jobs that we will lose next year when we go to school. But law schools have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to giving out "need based" aid.

Is that after you finished your NeedAccess? As of now, all I have listed is $20,500 in federal loans but I plan on turning in NeedAccess tonight. If I can get 20+ in need based grants a year, that would almost turn me into a lock to go to UM.ssanonymous wrote:FYI for anyone interested in need based aid. You should appeal. Maybe it's their policy to not give need-based grants to merit recipients, at least during the first pass. I don't know if I have the energy to appeal this as I'm super frustrated with all this money shit to begin withJacq2212 wrote:Mine is an unsubsidized loan and a dean's scholarship, I didn't think there was such a thing as a need based GRANT, grants are scholarships, right? hm, if they're offering need based grants I'm wondering why I didn't get in on that, my parents and I are all below poverty level.

My page doesn't even show the direct loan yet. When did it show up for people?

Its ridiculous because I would qualify for more in need-based aid than I have gotten in merit-based aid and if a 10k merit grant disqualifies me I'd rather not have the 10k grant.BigZuck wrote:Why? I submitted the need access form on 01/31 and filled out the finaid form on ASW in late Feb/early March. Whenever it became available. And I got an email today telling me to go to https://wolverineaccess.umich.edu to see my award statement. 25k in need based aid. 20ishk in unsubsidized loans. And the rest in grad PLUS loans.nsideirish wrote:Is that after you finished your NeedAccess? As of now, all I have listed is $20,500 in federal loans but I plan on turning in NeedAccess tonight. Did you get a message the first time saying you were ineligible for for need based aid?ssanonymous wrote:I submitted the need access form on 01/31 and filled out the finaid form on ASW in late Feb/early March.
