I'm confident I can get off the waitlist, but I'm assuming this likely means I'd have to pay sticker to attend.

Re: Southwestern
I'm thinking of taking a big scholly offer from University of La Verne and making a run at a transfer. I know everyone says not to do it, but I don't want to start law school in my 30's. 1L will be easier to handle closer to home anyway. I live 10 minutes from the school and although I'd love to go to school in L.A., I'm not looking forward to the daily commute.bigmnstyle wrote:Me too but I will probably withdraw and take a year off and get better score.

I am 22 so taking a year off is an easy option for me, I can see where you are coming from. Good luck to you.

Isn't La Verne only provisionally accredited by the ABA? If so, be sure to check out what schools will accept transfers from provisional ABA schools, because this might hinder your ability to transfer.I'm thinking of taking a big scholly offer from University of La Verne and making a run at a transfer.

One step ahead of you....all the schools I would submit transfer apps have no problems with provisional accreditation.LauraCB wrote:Isn't La Verne only provisionally accredited by the ABA? UCLA
USC
Loyola
Santa Clara
Pepperdine
Berkely
Chapman
Southwestern
Also, I'm not saying that I've decided that this is what I'm going to do. But it's something I'm strongly considering. If I have to go this route, I like La Verne better than Western State, and Whittier (all to which I've been accepted with scholly's), even though Whittier is ABA and AALS accredited.
I'm just saying that it's a safer route than paying sticker for Southwestern, even though I'd go to Southwestern over Chapman...AND Loyola. Southwestern just feels like the best fit.

Re: Southwestern
I actually liked Whittier when I visited. The school had a great feel to it although I wouldn't go even with the scholarship they offered me because Southwestern is much better. Honestly, I think it is a better move then going to LA Verne though. If you aren't capable of transferring out then you will limit your chances at employment greatly going to a provisional aba accredited school. What are your stats? lsat and gpa?

Re: Southwestern
A lot of people would say that about Southwestern. If it's not a prestigious school, shouldn't you just go to the school in your area where you want to live? If he wants to be in the inland empire I see nothing wrong with La Verne. You are right that he will probably have a hard time transferring, even if he does very well.

I'm not saying that I'm going to La Verne....I'm saying it would personally be the most convenient option since I live there. I have the rest of the month to decide and I'm weighing all options. Still haven't gotten a final decision from Chapman, and I'm not against fighting my way off the Southwestern waitlist because I've fallen in love with the school. I know that people wanting to transfer usually go to Whittier because it's a transfer haven, I've just heard so many bad things about it. I do have two friends who went there and transferred into the University of San Francisco and Loyola respectively. We'll see what happens. I'm visiting all campuses in the next two weeks and I'm sure things will be clearer then. I'm still doing everything I can to get into Southwestern.

Re: Southwestern
Whittier is better than La Verne
Either way, neither of the schools are good, but do well enough your first year and you can transfer out, if you don't get top 10 percent-- Public interest law could be an option which Whittier has a pretty good program for. What percentage of Southwestern do you think you would need to get in to transfer to UCLA? Berkeley?

Re: Southwestern
Actually...I'm really interested in public interest law. Which is why going to a higher ranked school just isn't that big of a deal to me. Whittier has a child advocacy program that I'm really attracted to. I want to work in the DA's office or be involved in public interest law in some capacity.bigmnstyle wrote:Whittier is better than La VerneEither way, neither of the schools are good, but do well enough your first year and you can transfer out, if you don't get top 10 percent-- Public interest law could be an option which Whittier has a pretty good program for. I'm not sure if transferring into UCLA or Berkeley from Southwestern is realistic, unless your in the top 3%....and even then it's a stretch. There is just too much competition for those schools, and I'm sure there's a lot of luck involved. Certainly not impossible, but that wouldn't be the reason to attend Southwestern. Southwestern I feel stands on it's own as a quality school with a large alumni base and has a great track record for post graduate employment. From what I hear from attorneys that I work for, and know personally, Southwestern grads compete favorably with Loyola grads in the LA market. Furthermore, if you wanted to work somewhere other than LA, it's certainly an option. It's probably not the best place to go for big law; but then again I don't think Southwestern students are all that interested in big law.
I don't know.....what do you think Dante?

Re: Southwestern
For private practice, generally speaking, Loyola students have an advantage over Southwestern students. For everything else, it's a wash. I think that a lot depends on the individual student. It's important to be very agressive in the job search and not sell yourself short. In my case, for instance, I'm pretty sure there are no students at USC or UCLA who are more qualified than I am to work at the SEC. If you figure out what you want and go after it, you have a very good chance of success.

Pending decision means they are reviewing your application. It took about a month for them to wait list me after my status changed to pending decision.

Re: Southwestern
I applied to SW as well. I notice though, they aren't on LSP at all. So....not to be a smart***, but doesn't that mean pretty much most people can get into a place like SW or Golden Gate?
Or am I totally crazy from being on TLS for so long? I actually was very impressed by SW's alumni and success stories, but then I wondered why they aren't Top 100.
Anyway, I applied two weeks ago and haven't heard anything at all.

Why are we not in the top 100? Because perception is divorced from reality. SW probably has as good a teaching faculty as any other school. We don't have as many prolific nationally known researchers (but we have some: Garland and Kushner for instance) It's actually better for your education to have faculty who devote as much or more of their efforts to teaching as research. Everyone knows law review research is kind of a joke anyway.
