Submitted end of Sept, complete beginning of Nov. Just had my interview today!

The admissions officer was very friendly and it genuinely felt like a conversation. She asked me the usual Why Law, Why Columbia, What do you see yourself doing after graduation, What are you looking for in a law school, and some questions about my personal statement (it felt so nice that she clearly had read it and didn't just have stock questions) as well as a few personal questions.

To prepare, I would recommend you just make sure you've done your school research, have some questions for them, and feel confident on the main Why Law types of questions. Also make sure you know what makes you interesting, because it seems like they genuinely just want to get to know you.

What should we make of these interview requests. Are we marginal candidates, YP candidates (if there's such a thing at Columbia), or is CLS just expanding their interview process this year and randomly selecting applicants?

Baseless speculation.

I think it's a combination of everything. Reading between the lines (or just making stuff up and pretending it's implied) on their website, I wouldn't be surprised if they have several groups of students that they want to know more about - marginal candidates, potential Hamilton/Butler candidates, unique or nontraditional candidates, etc. Who knows, but I get the impression that the interview invites are a little more directed than just random selection.

Am I correct in that this wave of interview invites is the first movement for RD candidates? If so, it may just be that they are simply expanding their interviewing. I got an invite as well just now btw; applied early November.

last year, a lot of people who were interviewed ended up with hamiltons or butlers. I think it's a good sign.

I would agree. I may be wrong, but from last year's thread it sounded as if they clearly stated it was random (although who knows) seeing as they were just starting out the interview aspect of admissions. This year, what they have written on their website is, "Candidates will be selected for a variety of reasons. We do not use any numeric cutoffs or thresholds to select those candidates." http://web.law.columbia.edu/admissions/ ... -questions

So, a variety of reasons. We're left to have fun speculating as to those reasons :D

I'm not sure if anyone received rejection yet, but I think some got waitlisted until April? (I'm not sure how ED process goes so not sure about the correct term)

Regardless, you're supposed to hear by the end of December for ED... In last year's thread the few ED applicants that hadn't heard by then called Jan 2nd when the office reopened and were emailed a decision shortly thereafter. If you still haven't heard I'd give them a call on Friday!

Anyone who just received an interview invitation submit in November? Seems there are a few late October applicants.
