Have you secured any legal work since you are a 3L. I heard the job market for entry levels is pretty bad down there

The job market is competitive, but the UMiami CDO (Career Development Office) does a great job at utilizing the school's contacts in the community and they update their job board daily with available full-time associate positions/clerkships/etc.

A lot of big names in the local legal community (managing partners, judges, etc.) have graduated from UM Law, and as such, I've definitely seen firsthand a general willingness to give interview preference to UM students over students from other local law schools.

I've been clerking with a pretty reputable firm's Miami office since my 2L year (secured through the CDO), and if all continues to go well I hope to parlay it into a full-time associate position upon graduation and passing the bar. Although nothing is set in stone.

I will say this: As far as obtaining a legal internship for the summer after your 1L year - it was not difficult at all. I was pretty surprised because I had heard some horror stories from students at other schools. As long as you perform reasonably well your first year (top half of the class) the CDO will definitely help you place into an internship.

That's great to hear, I hope you get that position. What area of law did you specialize in? Did that specialization help you obtain those positions in your 3L. I'm planning on specializing on patent/intellectual property law.

After satisfying my 1L requirements I've done my best to cater my curriculum mostly towards Civil Litigation and Products Liability law. I don't have an actual codified "specialty track" like I know some other law schools offer. My clerkship is with a civil litigation firm that does handle many products liability cases and I like to think that those related classes on my transcript helped them with the decision to hire me, but who really knows.

I already mentioned that my daughter received a $20,000 per year offer from Miami the week before seat deposits were due. During that same period, FIU upped her scholarship offer from $47,000 to $69,500 (additional $7,500 per year) along with multiple calls from the Dean.

She is still going to Miami. Not even a close decision.

I know that I'm not part of this thread at all, but I just happened to read this. You must have lots of money because I would've picked FIU and never looked back.

Sounds like only a $9,500 difference though, all joking aside. UM is worth $9,500 more than FIU. I would however, read the fine print very carefully on UM's scholarship. If it is a top 50% stip I would absolutely go FIU. I know that, "I will definitely be in the top 50% of the class," is the prevailing opinion. But every year, 50% of those who go in with that mindset are wrong, and UM at sticker is financial suicide.

Honestly speaking, prestige did factor into her decision. UM is THE school for those desiring to practice in Miami from what we understand.

I know this post is a couple of weeks old but it totally seems like it comes from someone inside UM... just sayin..

edit: also from what've read in other threads, the statement is not true. UF has better employment prospect in Miami and Florida in general

I just got in for the C/O of 2018 last week via a call from the Dean, and received the acceptance packet a few days later. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me about how long it took you guys to get your scholarship information after the original acceptance packet? I know its still September so I'm sure I have plenty of time, just curious. Thanks
