Re: In at Harvard: Class of 2016
Alright, let's make this meet-up happen.
I think we're better off doing tomorrow - I'm apprehensive about the prospect of finding a place in Cambridge that can accommodate a decent number of people, with low enough volume and personal space to talk and get to know each other, on a Saturday night. If people want to throw something together for tonight, I'm sure we can, but are people down for tomorrow?
As for location, I personally would prefer somewhere close to campus. I'm generally unfamiliar with Cambridge - I'll ask my friends from Boston and do some Yelping, but if anyone is familiar with the area and has an idea, go for it.
Update: one of my friends has suggested Brick & Mortar. It's right next to the T stop in Harvard Square. Would people be down for there at 9:30/10?
Update 2: Turns out when my friend said 'next to the T stop in the square,' she meant Central Square. Which is different.
Another (actually in Harvard Square) suggestion is Grendel's. Thoughts & etc? Input is appreciated as I don't want to forever been known as 'that girl who picked a terrible bar for the TLS meetup'

me too but that was really fun.
i looked at the schedule all like, "Seriously? We're going to have a 2-hr panel on one specific program as the FIRST thing we do?" Wasn't expecting that.

I don't know about you all, but personally, my favorite part was this little bit of subliminal (superliminal?) messaging: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hrvt1uuEyA

Yeah, it was surprising! A friend of mine was saying that highlighting negotiation is a good way to fundraise from non-lawyer donors because it's appealing to people outside of the profession.BalanceCare wrote:me too but that was really fun.

I was glad someone was thinking of the children (prodigies).Wormfather wrote:No I was the guy cringing when he said it.Yukos wrote:Wormfather were you the guy who called Theotis "another Trayvon Martin"?
And +1 to all of the above. Expected negotiation to be boring but it ended up being a really cool icebreaker and getting me interested in a program I never would have considered otherwise.

My most important question about ASW: any good swag?

I'm still down if other people are, but I'm assuming from the lack of response that people are not interested in a meet-up.
Swag is actually disappointingly lacking. Probably my only complaint...

This was the biggest troll of the entire weekend. When I saw the building, I expected them to say "And this is the temple to Zeus at Olympia" or something. Absolutely unreal place.Wormfather wrote:"This is the library"wert3813 wrote:For those of us dreaming of this thread...perceptions of Harvard and ASW?

Mock class about 4th Amendment. We somehow get derailed and start talking about "99 Problems." Professor casually mentions he brings in Jay-Z to talk about the case.wert3813 wrote:For those of us dreaming of this thread...perceptions of Harvard and ASW?

And yes we saved Barclay, dat jaw line, dat stubble!
Both the mock class and the faculty speech were incredible. And I ended up playing Mario Kart with some people from the journal I want to join after the org dinner. Pretty magical weekend, not sure what will top this.
Also, the current student I talked to who had straight Ps and eight job offers (including in DC) was reassuring.

FWIW I have a friend who says he is between 55th-40th (median but not sum laude) percentile and has a Federal clerkship in a city with more than one professional sports team.
Anyone talk to PI people or go to anything PI? What'd you hear about job markets, life at H, etc.?

The Dean said HLS is in the top 3 for job placement in every major legal market, including Shanghai, Tokyo, London, Paris... Also that in a down econony they ended up making last year their best employmeny year ever. Not sure what metric that's based on but it sounds good. Really sweet place. All the buildings are connected by tunnels so if the weather sucks you can just stay inside. Library was baller (so big they estimate only 10% of the books in it have been checked out. Ever... In the history of the school...) and apparently scotus judges can be seen there hanging out and reading almost once a semester, of coursewert3813 wrote:FWIW I have a friend who says he is between 55th-40th (median but not sum laude) percentile and has a Federal clerkship in a city with more than one professional sports team.

I've talked to a bunch of people doing criminal law (prosecution/defense) - they all seem really happy. I haven't talked to any 3Ls, but the 1Ls and 2Ls have had no trouble getting great internships and really love the PI Office.wert3813 wrote:FWIW I have a friend who says he is between 55th-40th (median but not sum laude) percentile and has a Federal clerkship in a city with more than one professional sports team.

One person said that Harvard had incredible PI resources, you just have to work a little harder than the private sector people to get to them. If you want to work for a firm, everything you need is very obviously right there. For PI, all the resources are there, you just have to seek them out.

Wow. Very very happy with ASW. It's great to get the JS2, the email (verifies that you were not dreaming), the packet...but being here makes it real. Amazing community.
