All Arizonians:

Earlier I posted asking for people's thoughts on the Phoenix area, etc. (thanks to all those that replied), but I've been seeing something very troubling when looking around the internet... and that is Phoenix's poor air quality. A few resources site Phoenix as having the worst air quality in America! Do any of you have, have had, or are in fear of having medical conditions resulting from the air quaility in Phoenix? Am I correct to worry about this? Thanks again you guys!

I can see why you are concerned, considering your fear is a valid thing to be worried about. I have lived in Phoenix since I was 3, about 19 years total now. I can only speak personally, but I have not had ANY problems nor has anyone in my family with regards to illnesses of any sort relating to poor air quality. Not a single problem. That being said, there are certain days in the year where we do have poor air quality advisories, where people are advised to carpool if they can and what not, so there clearly is an air problem.

I am no doctor, but i would say that as long as you do not have any sort of pre-existing condition or family history of problems relating to air pollution that you will probably be fine as long as you are aware of it.

I have lived all around the country and in Phoenix for many years. Phoenix is in a valley so there are temp inversions in the winter but air quality is not a real health issue. Not only is there no comparison between LA and Phx but Phx is alot better than most major (and some small) cities in valleys. For instance Salt Lake City is much worse in my view ( pun intended).

I can see why you are concerned, considering your fear is a valid thing to be worried about. I have lived in Phoenix since I was 3, about 19 years total now. like I said earlier, I've lived in Phoenix for almost 30 years with no problem. This probably isn't the place to come to help with your tuberculosis (like it was for my great grandpa), but my buddies and I ride our bikes for up to 7hrs per day in the summer, and I don't know anyone with any air quality related health issues; but it is pretty gross when you're at the top of south mtn or 4peaks and you can see the brown cloud between you and the city.
Of course if air quality is a primary concern for you or someone in your family...you might consider boulder or Eugene, but if you just need it to be nice enough that you don't end up with black lung in 3 years from now, I think you'll be fine.

There are certainly negatives about Phoenix, but the positives outweigh them for most of us. There is a little boutique near my house that sells t shirts that say "love Phoenix or leave Phoenix," and they are pretty popular among the central Phoenix crowd.
Personally, my decision to attend ASU was ultimately made based on the fact that I never want to live more than about 3miles away from where I do right now....I was about to go into a bunch more things that I love about this place, but I'll save it, unless you want to hear it.

I also have a wife and two children. We've lived in the Phoenix area for more than 7 years now and have had no problems with any of the environmental conditions other than cursing the summer heat.

Phoenix has the "worst" air quality in america for one reason and one reason only - dust counts in the measurement. Believe it or not, deserts are more dusty than other places. Now you know.

Edit: And yes, Phoenix is pretty damn awsome.

To add my two cents... the transition will likely be hard on your family, especially if you move in the summer. The heat is intense and takes a lot of getting used to - those first few months after your move will be by far the hardest. They may not like AZ very much at first (I certainly didn't, when we moved here, in August, for my husband's job). However, 4+ years in I love it and don't want to live anywhere else.

For all of my future ASU colleagues, when I smell bad and look miserable, I apologize in advance! Here, the highest temperature rarely, if ever, in the 'blazing' dead of summer ever gets close to the highs in Arizona winters.

Once it was like 72 here and I thought I was surely going to melt. Maybe I actually will!

I have lived in Phoenix my whole life and would agree with the above posters... it will absolutely suck to move here in the summer. BUT you will love the weather once mid-October comes around

I hear that along with ASU's plan of weaning themselves from public funding, Jan Brewer has plans to give UofA back to it's rightful owners in Mexico.

As a lifelong phx resident, and ASU ug, I have always felt the rivalry with UA and with T-Town.
its a fun rivalry though...nowhere near as bitter as those big 10 or SEC rivalries.
