so its definitely contingent on grades and we have a greater chance of rejection.abcd wrote:i really dont think its random. my friends that did great on the lsat got their acceptance emails within 2 weeks and they applied after us.

Eh, I'm not so sure about this. Once you get tired of drinking with your buddies and hooking up with the excess of slutty sorority girls, you realize that Lubbock doesn't have much to offer. Texas Tech University is one of the only things that makes Lubbock a fun place.TT09 wrote:I can ASSURE you that Lubbock "when you were a kid" and Lubbock now are like night and day; there is no comparison. My rankings as well. FWIW the recent National Law Journal Go-To Law Schools ranking has UT at 20, SMU at 27, Houston tied with Ohio State at 42, and Baylor not in the top 50.txadv11 wrote:Honestly, I've done too much research and know at least someone from almost every TX school. At the moment MY rankings are:
1. UT
2. SMU
3. Houston
4. Baylor
5. Tech
6. STCL
7. St. Mary's
8. Texas Wesleyan
9. TSU-Thurgood Marshall
note- SMU-Houston-Baylor can flip flop when you compare market, cost, specialty etc
also St. Mary's and Wesleyan are pretty close IMHO.
But for what I want to do (again, litigation, criminal, appellate), I'd say Baylor and STCL are the obvious choice.

Seems to me that if South Texas Law was Texas A&M Law, it would be Tier 2.jacketman03 wrote:That sounds about like my rankings of the schools here, but I'd flip UH and SMU for me since UH would be free and SMU would not.txadv11 wrote:Honestly, I've done too much research and know at least someone from almost every TX school. Also, I would say if you're more interested in working in Houston, you could maybe flip Tech and STCL, but other than that I wouldn't.

Alright, lets try something.
Post Your:
1. Top choice, that is currently offered.
2. Best financial decision.
3. School you are GLAD you aren't going to--that you were considering/applied to.
4. Type of law you like/want.
----------------------------------
#1. STCL AND Texas Tech
#2. Oklahoma City with 66% scholy and U-Ark, Little Rock, paying only 10,000/yr.
#3. Akron, who I eventually found out has around 80% of first year students lose scholarships due to the curve they set up!
#4. Criminal/public service and appellate.
2. Texas Tech
3. Ave Maria
4. International Business Transactions

4. Villanova
5. Baylor
6. South Texas
I applied to some other places on the east and west coast but have no plans to attend them either way.
My dream/goal is to go into civil litigation/personal injury. I am only considering schools that are known for their advocacy programs, though UH would be the exception because of their location in Houston.

You are way off base. I am finishing up my undergrad at TT and have nothing but great things to say about Lubbock. The slutty sorority girls comment is a little naive. I know a lot of people that came to Lubbock and refused to leave afterwards. This town is great and anyone saying the town should discourage you from the law school does not know what they are talking about. I grew up in Houston and can say Lubbock is a town full of the nicest folks in the country. That being said...after 4 years here I am ready to leave. Mainly because my friends will be leaving too. If I came here and made new friends in law school I think this would be a great experience.

I'm currently finishing my undergrad here as well. All I'm saying is that there is nothing special about Lubbock outside of the university and the activities associated with it.

Re: South Texas 2011
Let me ask you Tech people this.
Compare STCL to Tech--assume for a minute that tuition is EQUAL, with a slightly higher cost of living in Houston. Where/how do Tech's grads place? Dallas? Houston? West TX?
Tech is tier 3 with more of a "ring" in the name to the average public, while STCL is tier 4 (whats the real difference) seems to have a higher pull for criminal lawyers and judges, but probably strictly in "south" Texas

I am a student at the Law School, and it is excellent in every respect.CrimLaw300 wrote:I'm currently finishing my undergrad here as well. I must emphasize that the perspective of your surroundings while in undergrad is drastically different from the perspective of your surroundings while in law school. While in undergrad, the social activities and social scene of the city might be important in this evaluation; in law school, these are much less important. In law school, if you are interested in succeeding, organizing your time around studying without distraction is paramount—and, believe me, studying will take up most of your time.
If you are a law student, there is a lot special about Lubbock outside of the University. I lived in Austin for 20 years before coming to Lubbock, and I really like both cities, however, for me, Lubbock is more ideal as a law student. Just a few things I appreciate: minimal traffic (no rush hour), I love the weather (excluding the recent arctic two weeks we had in February), there are some great restaurants, locals are generally very friendly, no panhandlers on every corner (unlike Austin), a big, beautiful, west Texas sky, and most importantly, minimal distractions.
Honestly, I think this is the perfect city to live in while going to law school.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
