Anyone who considers this holistic hasn't done enough LS research.
Law School Numbers only reflects a tiny tiny tiny percentage of the applicants a school receives. It's strange that people base so much on such a tiny sample. Dean Rosenzweig had a post a few pages back that indicated how different the actual Emory graph looks from the LSN graph. I've talked to quite a few people who are at Emory and who work at Emory and I continue to believe that as a school it is fairly holistic in its approach.
LSN Apps to Emory in 09 = 318
Total Apps to Emory = 4,589
LSN = 7% of all Emory apps. While small and self-selected, I wouldn't consider this a "tiny tiny percentage", nor would I consider it small enough to discredit such a strong correlation.

You're certainly far less likely to get a picture of outliers though.

Why is that? Students w/ a whole range of numbers use LSN

That's a great point about outliers. What concerns me about LSN is that for many if not most schools, the lines seem so clearly drawn between acceptance and rejection. Most charts are pretty easily cut into two categories, with some yellow sprinkled in the middle. If the charts are not accurate portraits, why would the lines be so clearly drawn? If they are inaccurate, wouldn't it be more random instead of what seems like very clearly defined numbers?

I did see their medians. All I'm saying, is that it is dangerous to read too much into the graphs on LSN and to base decisions on where to apply off Law School Predictor. The samples are simply too small. In my personal experience from this cycle, I have been admitted to schools that LSP indicated I would be denied at and that the LSN graph showed me as being surrounded in red. There is some level of holistic approach that goes beyond a school's just looking at your LSAT and GPA.

Hahahaha! I will agree with you on WashU.

I guess I really like Emory and feel a bit protective. WashU just makes me angry. If Emory only accepts 167 and higher LSAT scores in the first few batches, I will eat my words!

I don't know. I hope it's holistic because I'm below the lsat range. We'll see though.

I am a million times below their LSAT range! I feel really good about my application though. So, we will see!

Also, stupid question, but will decisions come via e-mail or by letter? Or will it be with both and the letter will include financial award information?

That's true to some extent, but I also believe to some extent that the average TLS or LSN user has higher gpa/LSAT than average applicants.

It doesn't hurt to apply. LSP/LSN aren't perfect, especially if you have an unusal app/splitter/urm/etc. They're just useful tools to establish a list of schools you can expect to have a fair shot at so you don't waste hundreds of dollars on app fees to schools you have little-to-no chance at (if you have that kind of money, by all means).

Yeah, you could be right about that, in that the LSN data is skewed toward high GPA/LSATs

I wonder what the median LSAT for LSN users is

Does anyone else's family ask "isn't that a black school?" when they say they applied to Emory?
I guess because it's in GA and sounds like "Ebony"...

ok... where do we start?

for one, i know from my cycle that just getting accepted at a school didn't mean squat to me until i found out how much money i was getting. in dean ethan's email, he told you, you're going to find that out when you get your acceptance, which, if your acceptance arrives in february, is a full month faster than i found out from any school in my cycle. so there's that.

for two, if you think emory is a school filled will homogenized students (the 3.7/167 automaton) you are sorely mistaken. frankly, hardly anyone here at emory knows about lawschoolnumbers or tls, and even the ones that do know of it give it about as much attention as it deserves. allow me to be your first data point. i am here and i did not score 166/167. emory takes outliers just the same as any other school. we have a strong heritage of diversity. did you know former dean ben johnson ('39) spearheaded a petition to strike down a georgia law causing higher ed. institutions to lose tax exempt status if they should integrate? this occurred in 1962. emory was not dragged into the era of equal protection, it led the way. in that vein, emory remains a super diverse and interesting place to go to school, in any way one can construe diversity; ethnically, religiously, geographically, socially, etc... please, i would appreciate it if you would ease off on comparing emory's students to a nondescript group of people who just happened to make some all-important cutoff.

for three, emory's admissions staff is the most responsive, friendly, hardworking staff i had the pleasure to meet in my cycle, and i met quite a few staffs. this was my experience. i'm sorry if yours hasn't been the same. but have you visited? did you reach out to the school prior to clicking "send" on lsac.org? if emory isn't living up to your expectations, i'm sorry about that. but give them a little time here. remember, you won't enroll until late august. that is over six months away. you still have plenty of time to settle up w/ your lessor and find a quality place to live, wherever you may go.

for four, i don't want to seem insensitive because i can remember all too well the stress of this process. i know for three solid months i got into a serious relationship with my mailman, just hoping the acceptances would roll in. it's tough, and i'm going to try to read all this as (at least most of) you all feeling very eager to get that acceptance and earnestly hoping emory will reciprocate the interest you've shown. hang tough. it will be worth it, and if any of you have questions about the school; or if anyone comes down here and would like me to show him/her around, please let me know.

That email we got today's making me nervous. Can't wait to hear back, but still nervous about getting a rejection.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
