Can anyone else comment on obtaining residency? Has anyone successfully done this?

Thanks for the response.jafadoo wrote:I used to do residency for a uni here, and I can tell you that it's virtually impossible to get AZ residency while going to school.missinglink wrote:Just got an email recently asking for a "Why Arizona" supplement. Looking back at the thread, it seems some other people got that as well. I think I'll just put something together highlighting some programs specific to the school, and mention the region as one that I wouldn't mind staying in.
Anyone know how easy/difficult it is to establish residency in Arizona? Looking at some information online, it looks like merely being a student is insufficient for establishing residency for tuition purposes.
Rather, you have to somehow demonstrate intent to stay permanently domiciled in the state, for the purpose of working after graduation if you don't have prior ties to the state.
There are a couple work arounds that I can think of right now:
1. Join the AZ national guard.
2. Marry an AZ resident.
I think these are the only two options; each one gives instant resident status.
Since #1 and #2 are highly unlikely, it looks like OOS tuition for me if they end up accepting me. There would probably have to be some sort of merit aid to make it worth my while, though.

hmm... haven't gotten that email (yet). seems like there's no rhyme or reason to az's admissionssteven3579 wrote:My status was complete, then commitee review. I got a "Why Arizona?" email while still in review and responded with a quick half page email. About five days later my status was update to admitted. 162, 3.4 (4.0)

They seem to be very slow with a lot of qualified applicants. I was complete in early December, and I am still under committee review with a 3.55 and a 173. I think I may just withdraw though, because I have several other great options. I was really high on Arizona, but I just can't wait anymore.

withdrawing with 16k per year. I really liked the idea of going, but my wife's employment prospects weren't that good in Tucson. Good luck to those still waiting!

Hey, I'm just trying to figure out whether going out of state v.s. a full ride at AZ (probably) was the right call. What does the 90% of the class at Arizona do that strikes out at biglaw? Say, if you finish median what do you end up doing?

I'm linking to another TLS post.
Please help Pepsi with his decision on ASU/UA. Only 5 people have voted so far, and I think we all have some good feedback to share.

Re: Arizona 2010?
I went and was really impressed. The law school building is impressive as is most of the campus in general. Really got a sense from the Dean Ponoroff as well as various assistant deans that the law school is very focused on the success of their students and very willing to aid and assist in any way they can. The school had a laid back atmosphere where it felt the law students respect each other and are friendly. The Tucson area in general is not as nice as Phoenix (spent a lot of time in both areas over the weekend). Its not bad, just the areas surrounding the school for quite a ways is nowhere near as nice as the areas around ASU (Tempe, Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler and Scottsdale).pepsi wrote:did anyone go to the ASD? Overall though, the visit left me with a definite positive impression. I'm still waiting on a few schools but U of A is my top choice at this point.

Re: Arizona 2010?
In via status checker, dated Monday. That helps to salvage the week with a Hastings WL yesterday.
Does anyone know how/when admitted students are notified about scholarship offers? I'm currently deciding between going to USD's ASD, and U of A's, which are on the same day. Since USD declined to offer a scholarship in light of a newer (and higher) LSAT score, anything from U of A would put them high on the list.
I'm more interested in seeing U of A, though. My number one question for the people at the law school is where most end up after law school. I've seen people mention around here that an Arizona degree is somewhat portable to California, assuming you place near the top of the class. Some solid numbers would be nice.

Re: Arizona 2010?
My offer came with my acceptance letter, which I received about a week after being accepted on the status checker (and I live in Tucson). However, I think some people have mentioned receiving the offer letter a few days after receiving their acceptance letter. Either way, they seem to get it to you pretty quickly.missinglink wrote:In via status checker, dated Monday. That helps to salvage the week with a Hastings WL yesterday.

Re: Arizona 2010?
Just got my packet in the mail. 16k per year. No GPA stipulations too, which is nice in comparison to some of the requirements other schools attach to scholarships.
Looks like I'll be at Preview Day next Saturday.

Re: Arizona 2010?
Hey everybody, I'm looking forward to meeting some of you at ASD on the 10th! I'm curious to know how many people on this thread have already made the decision to go to UA? Are any of you turning down offers at T14s to go to Tucson? Is anybody still debating the UA v. T14 question? I still can't make up my mind (hopefully ASD will help) and I'm curious to know where some of you are at.

Re: Arizona 2010?
I made this decision in favor of the T-14 (in fact, after debating the issue I decided not to even apply to the U of A). I want to work in AZ but the market is just too competitve for me to risk it. What factors are you weighing?
