what can you do at SLS that you can't do as well elsewhere? What type of law or university opportunities are especially good at Stanford? I am deciding on schools and if I enroll at SLS I want to make sure I play to its strengths, though I'm sure it's relatively top in all areas. To rephrase, how is SLS aiming towards the "future" in law/business without resting on laurels?
What?

+1. This is a loaded question and I think probably only a few select people (ie. the Dean of SLS) could answer this with any type of meaningful answer.

And couldn't one ask the same of, say, Harvard and Yale? I just don't understand how this question is at all Stanford-specific.

Well I didn't mean to throw a "loaded question." I meant to ask what does SLS specifically shine in. Is there some aspect of law, or the way they guide you career-wise, which is unique? I know Stanford in general focuses on "the future" and I figure if I attend, I would rather try to get ahead of the curve. That means either the field of law (IP? Environmental?) or the type of career - Silicon valley/SF vs. NYC.

I think you can figure this out if/when you go there. It appears you have the ability to both over-simplify the field of law and at the same time ask very difficult questions (ie. predict the future of law). I'll attempt to answer what I think you asked:

If you are interested in IP or Environmental law, then Stanford has strong programs in both. I think it is also generally believed that both of these are fields of law that are growing (especially Environmental law) although I don't know if there are a lot of great paying jobs in Environmental law (this is just my assumption). As far as SF vs. NYC, it's generally recommended that if you want to work in SF then Stanford is your best bet, if you want to work in NYC then go to Yale, Harvard, Columbia or NYU.

FWIW it's the prevailing sentiment at the law school that the west coast markets (LA/SF) seem even a bit harder for SLS students to get than NYC/DC. Even though SLS absolutely dominates those markets, and students by no means have a particularly hard time breaking in, everyone seems to want to go there. SLS grads are in demand in NYC and DC.

I withdrew from HLS today :D after speaking with career counselors, deans and professors and students at both schools, and legal professionals; after stacking up numbers and rankings; after visiting both schools for their ASWs; and after investigating both schools' student handbooks… but I've applied for a deferral!!

Another waitlister should get good news soon…

Soooo... Have to make a deposit to Chicago on Friday, and Chicago makes you withdraw all pending applications. Should I call Stanford?

I thought Chicago only makes you withdraw if you're deferring. Anyone else have info here?

No, they definitely make you withdraw any pending apps.

I'd call, especially if you'd be willing to ride out the waitlist at SLS.

Pretty sure this has been discussed elsewhere and is untrue. My understanding is you only have to withdraw all apps if you defer. If you're just depositing, you have to withdraw all other acceptances. If an app is still pending or you're on a WL, these are fine. Forget where I saw that, maybe the Harvard thread?

nm...it's directly on the Commitment Response Form page: "You are not required to remove your name from waitlists at other law schools."

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
