So I got an email today from the dean saying, "Congratulations once more on your admission to Columbia Law School," and then had some information, but that was the first i had heard. How do the initial decisions go out? Did I miss a phone call or is it by mail or something?

Initial acceptances/dings go out via snail mail. I got the same email with that survey today and got my decision letter last week. It sounds like you got accepted but you just haven't received the mail yet or it got lost. So a tentative congrats

It's by snail mail. That being said, a bunch of people have reported not receiving the initial package, and only receiving "follow-up" communications days later. You probably have an acceptance package floating around in the lost vortex of USPS

I finally went complete today after a month. Is the status checker completely useless now? Am I just supposed to be waiting patiently for a letter?

The average time from complete to decision seems to be about 4-8 weeks.
