I've definitely found the swift ding to be better if only because I feel I can wrap that school up and put it away. Mine was UR1 12/3 .
I was always expecting at best a wait list. Surprised they have not just dropped the axe like they have on others.

Be sure to mention that you are interested in people who smile. Bonus points if you have ever been interested in becoming an astronaut. Apparently NYU students are into that kind of thing.Wormfather wrote:Complete early Dec UR3 2/4. WL, here I come!.
Dear NYU,
With enough money, I could be convinced to take you over HYS. Just sayin'

Looks like they're sending out IILJ finalist emails. Few people got one yesterday and I just got one today.

I don't know specifically, but I've worked in development at a university before and most of the named scholarships are endowed scholarships that a donor has established for any amount of money (sometimes only $10,000/year) and they have very specific criteria in mind. So these other scholarships are probably given out through the normal financial aid process as they find someone who matches the donor's criteria, so they don't bother have an application process for them. Sometimes it's based on your state of residency, your undergrad institution, your interests, your financial need, it could be anything. I would guess most of these are pretty minor compared to the named scholarships that you apply for --probably only 1-2 students per year and not full tuition.toothbrush wrote:look at this nyu alum newsletter

That's sort of what I assume. I did some other research and I found that some of them are donors of quite a bit of money according to alumni news. I wonder what sort of weight those people have, etc.ph5354a wrote:I don't know specifically, but I've worked in development at a university before and most of the named scholarships are endowed scholarships that a donor has established for any amount of money (sometimes only $10,000/year) and they have very specific criteria in mind. Re: NYU C/O 2016 Applicants Thread!!! (Woooooo!!!!!)
Yeah I would assume so too. Oftentimes major donors will endow a small/medium sized scholarship just for the name recognition (or in honor of a relative/parent, etc.) and give other major gifts in addition to that to other areas, like building projects, etc. Major donors do pull a lot of weight, but don't overestimate that. In my experience, effective development professionals allow donors to have an appropriate amount of input without compromising the integrity of the school. Or, more cynically, they allow donors to feel like they have a lot of input while making sure administrators still do what's best for NYU. There's 1 maybe 2 donors at every school that can really influence major changes if they wanted to. Most of the donor influence comes in admissions (getting the ear of the admissions officer to get your kid in), but schools have to be very delicate about allowing too many sub-par candidates in just for the sake of their donors because then their medians can take a hit so this is usually done very sparingly.toothbrush wrote:That's sort of what I assume. Thanks, guys! If there's a moral to my story it's not to give up faith if you can't log into the ASW (I still can't - maybe I broke it from trying too many times).
FWIW, I applied on 1/20, got UR updates on 1/23, 1/24, went back to complete on 1/25, and another UR on 2/11 before a 2/13 acceptance. Take from that what you will

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
