At the risk of derailing this conversation about debt I have a question. Does anyone know what some typical characteristics of an HLS interview that went POORLY might be? Tryin 2 think back on my interview and analyze bc what else am I gonna do when I'm home sick and it's admissions season

No connections, but you could totally be right about the generational gap. I think the point still stands when we're discussing other T14 schools, though, but who knows what will happen three days from now, let alone three years.calpolisci2016 wrote: How old is this lawyer you are talking about? And did this lawyer come from a lawyer family or some other legally-connected background? It's not uncommon to see lawyers who came up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s have stellar careers and they came from non-T14, or even TTT schools. If you look at federal judges who came up from that era, you can easily find non-brand schools listed. Heck, even Chris Christie and Joe Biden went to no-brand schools.
I think the legal field was way less competitive back then because there were more big law jobs for everybody and the economy was growing overall. But I'm not sure how their experience is applicable to the post-2007 legal market. Of course we don't know how our generation of lawyers will play out, and there'll always be exceptions to the rule, but I'm sure that exception will become less and less common as the legal market shrinks.

Re: Harvard Law c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
i think the distribution of 225 people in 4 categories may not be very realistic, esp in the outer bands (170 and below, 176 and up). even tho 25% is 170, it's most likely a lower half of bell distribution, which means more 170s than 169s, and many more 169 than 168 and so on.forum_user wrote:Assuming that HLS makes offers (approx. 900 based on past statements) consistent with their desired medians (which they probably don't--they probably make more offers to high-stat applicants), that means they'd admit about:Monday wrote: HLS 25th - 170
170 and up: -3%, or 2288 potential applicants from approx. 2364 last year
HLS 50th - 172
172 and up: -17%, or 1145 potential applicants from approx. 1380 last year
(173 median for Class of 2020 looks unlikely as it's -15.5%, or 843 applicants from approx. 998 last year)
HLS 75th - 175
175 and up: -20.5%, or 371 potential applicants from approx. 467 last year
225 people below 170 (out of ~14,000 [assuming LSAT floor of ~155])
225 people w/ 170-172 (out of ~1,400)
225 people w/ 173-175 (out of ~600)
225 people w/ 176-180 (out of ~250)
Caveat: I have no idea how percentiles or almost anything else works.
actually it's possible that about 10% is 170 while 60% is 172, which may make 1/2 of the class between 170-172. this may be more true of actual matriculations (~560) than original offers (~900), due to difference in yield across bands.
so it seems the 170 and below offers may be much less than 225. similarly 175-and-up offers should be less than 225 also, but to slightly lesser extent than 170-and-below offers.
any stats on distribution of GPA for different bands e.g. for 172+ of 1145 applicants?
(it seems that'd primarily determine if HYS has more than needed applicants to maintain medians)

Re: Harvard Law c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
is 1145 the number of of people who actually applied or just the number of people that have score of 172+ during this cycle?Monday wrote:Yeah, let's move toward speculations and not placing the cart before the horse (at least for the majority of us).
Per Spivey's data: in the Class of 2018 cycle, there were 903 173+ scores and HLS actually maintained its 173 median then. Seeing the median dropped to 172 last year, even with 1098 173+ scores, I think HLS is quite comfortable with either a 172 or a 173 median but either way, HLS won't face much trouble.goldenbear2020 wrote:Assuming HLS wants its 173 median back and YS hold their medians, that's at least 563/2 + 210/2 + 180/4 = 432 seats for 173+ scorers, out of an applicant pool of 840. That means HYS will enroll at least 51% of all 173+ scorers this cycle, and that's not even considering the GPA cutoffs. CLS enrolls at least another 12%.Monday wrote:There are way more 172+ scores than HYS collectively need.
Also Thursday for JS2!
the seats for 173+ applicants would be more a little more than 432 in HYS as the 40% of Y and 65% of S could very likely be 173. that means additional 10% of Y and 10% of S, which is ~40 more seats. so more like ~472.
if all HYS hold their medians, then for 172+ pool, they likely have 563*0.6 + 210*0.65 + 180*0.4 = 545 seats
This is out of 172+ pool of 1145 applicants, but it doesn't include Chi/Col/NYU seats and doesn't consider the GPA distribution in this pool.
so with a 172+ score it seems one has about 50% CRUDE chance with HYS discounting the GPA distribution and extra seats.

Also Thursday for JS2!I do not think, given the existence of myLSN, it's of any value to calculate chance, crude or otherwise, with these numbers. Unless, of course, it's just to help us trod along to 180. I only cited the numbers to tell the optimists: "Abandon hope all ye who enter here!" because the decrease in 170+ scores will not be consequential for HYS; in fact, I do not think this cycle has been anything like it was trumped up to be for even the rest of T14s. Goldenbear's calculation shows us the minimum number of matriculants needed (the easiest way for a 173 median), although you are certainly right in that the median is unlikely to be defined as the number greater than the 49.99th percentile.appind wrote:the seats for 173+ applicants would be more a little more than 432 in HYS as the 40% of Y and 65% of S could very likely be 173. that means additional 10% of Y and 10% of S, which is ~40 more seats. so more like ~472.

Either way, HYS won't be weird this year, and that might be oddly comforting.
it should be consequential as there are 235 (~20%) less potential applicants in the 172+ pool
