FTFY
are we pretending that being a URM doesn't change admissions prospects now?
Not saying good/bad, and not trying to say he doesn't deserve to be there; just saying that berkeley definitely hates low GPAs; the URM status is a mitigating factor; and it's ridiculous to pretend otherwise.

It's only 2 pm so you've got at LEAST 3 hours to obsessively wait and stress.

The actual fallacy is the assumption that the rule that Berkeley weighs GPA more than its peer schools (which is easily borne out by looking at LSN and the median GPAs of schools) is disproven by one person getting in with a lower GPA.
This "blackness" thing, true or not, was pointed out in a bizarre and inflammatory fashion.

not holding my breath for you to one day post, "pretty sure it has something to do with your whiteness."
you know, bc it's not hard to track how being White in America changes ones admissions prospects. or are you still pretending?

Leave the affirmative action debate out of the thread, guys. While URM admissions are often hard to predict, it has been noticed that schools prefer URM reverse splitters, so I think it's understandable why a low GPA candidate would be surprised by admission, regardless of their race. A simple "congrats" is all you really need to say.

But seriously: has everyone who's received a call talked to Dean Tom, or are other people making calls, too?
Also: any status-checker movement?

Congrats to all admits!!!!
You could be called by someone else in the office as well. Dean Tom was not the only person who made calls earlier in the cycle.

California public schools, including UC Berkeley, by law, are not allowed to consider URM status. They like high GPAs, but they have a more hollistic review process than most other schools. It is not unheard of for someone with low numbers but unique softs or a compelling personal background to get in.

QFT. For once, Prop 209 can end a discussion rather than start one.

So kimpossible and Quailman were both from California (that was a weird phrase to type). Are they calling west coasters first, maybe?

I will start one in your honor - how do you enforce "consideration"?
edited to clarify that I support the consideration.
