I don't think we necessarily equate "held" with "waitlist", or am I missing something? I think the hold email says is more in tune with what Kakarot mentioned earlier:
Kakarot wrote:Well, it is better than a Wait List. Basically a "we haven't forgot about you, but we want to see who is going to apply with December numbers."
As you can see from what people are saying on this thread, the "hold" email will sort out those applicants who still wish to attend from those who are now committed, either because of ED or personal preference, elsewhere.

This seems to be better than a waitlist so you should feel more honored.

I got the hold e-mail, and I agree that it is not a waitlist. When you apply they say you'll get a decision in 12ish weeks, and since they aren't ready to make a decision, they had to contact us to let us know they haven't forgotten us. Instead, we will get a decision in the Spring.
I'm a URM, so I was expecting the long wait. And I'm honestly thrilled right now to still be in the game.

I'm waiting in tremble for my hold or rejection email. I submitted in the last few days of September but didn't receive an email today. Seeing that HLS is holding people with similar and higher stats is certainly not a good sign

I honestly think that "On Hold" is the early applicant's equivalent of a waitlist. Harvard sends waitlists out in April, so it's too early now. But, they have to tell us something now to tide us over.

Makes me wonder if those of us who applied in September and didn't get the hold email today really will hear one way or the other in the next 10 days or so.

Thank you guys for the On Hold clarification. I was honored (but disappointed) at what I thought was a waitlist but now I feel even better (and MORE honored) at an on-hold email for an auto-reject candidate based on numbers alone.
THANKS EVERYONE!!
What do you guys plan to do to get off?

I am not on hold yet but I'd say get a kick ass rec. letter that says something new about you and send a LOCI. The email encourages both. HOWEVER, if you do that now, you won't have much left in your arsenal in case you're put on WL later.

Still complete 10/28, no hold email, no JR1

Same here. I fear that we, my friend, are the future rejects of the HLS 2009/10 cycle.

"complete 10/28" -- do you mean you got the complete e-mail on that date? or does your status checker say that?

You and I have near identical submit and JR1 dates. I know we've been over this before, but I guess we'll be finding out together. Good luck to you, lz.

Crack, you and Managamy make me sad, knowing that even if I get into my top choice, I'll still be overly concerned with my admissions.

What? That went over my head I'm afraid. Do you mean that if you got into Stanford tomorrow, you'd still care about your pending decisions at Harvard and Yale based on my apparent interest in my pending decisions at said schools? Now I'm more confused than when I started.

I think he means that since you and managamy still care about H, Y, Chicago, etc. after getting into Stanford, he fears he will too by the same model.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
