Re: Berkeley 2011 applicants
Question: On my app (UR 1/18), I did not authorize them to have my file reviewed by the student committee. Does this mean I will not have a CR1? Also, what is/are potential pitfalls of what I did?

I was always under the impression that students are always on the committee. Maybe they just don't get a chance to vote on it?SLS2011 wrote:Question: On my app (UR 1/18), I did not authorize them to have my file reviewed by the student committee. I thought if you don't authorize, you won't go to CR. So either you have to get admitted through administrative review. They will probably go thorough the pending ones one last time after CR2 completes. So if you didn't authorize and don't get dinged before then it's logical to assume you will get another look before decisions are finalized (with possibility of admit/reject/WL).WonkyPanda wrote:I was always under the impression that students are always on the committee. Re: Berkeley 2011 applicants
I didn't authorize it, and I got the CR2 email today. Just means your application can't be reviewed by student members of the committee, it can still be reviewed by faculty members of the committee.r6_philly wrote:I thought if you don't authorize, you won't go to CR. This isn't the way it works. If you check no, all that happens if Dean Tom sends you to CR is that the student portion of the committee won't get to see or vote that package.r6_philly wrote:I thought if you don't authorize, you won't go to CR. Good to know. Is there any perceived or real drawback to this?Rotor wrote: This isn't the way it works. If you check no, all that happens if Dean Tom sends you to CR is that the student portion of the committee won't get to see or vote that package.

I allowed students to view my app. I figure it can't hurt. I think they'll empathize with me much better than the older law profs.r6_philly wrote:Good to know. Re: Berkeley 2011 applicants
The students will be asked to make a case for you. They'll try to argue why you should be admitted over another candidate in question, and the faculty will take the arguments into consideration. Students only serve advisory roles; they have no voting power. This info is through a friend through a former Boalt adcomm. Take it with a grain of salt I guess.

I think Flips has got it-- and will be a personal decision. Because I was a nontrad and a veteran, I thought I might be disadvantaged. In the end, I just checked yes.r6_philly wrote:Good to know. So....there is like a 15% chance to get accepted after going to CR?

Interview with Dean Tom:
Dean Tom: “Yeah. But it’s structured this way because I know what I’m looking for. And, if my staff finds an applicant whom they want to admit, they have to bring the file to me for a final review. Concurrent to this review process we also identify about 1400 to 1600 other applications that are very competitive, and these we send to our faculty admissions committee, comprised of 6 faculty and 12 students. Students serve in an advising capacity on the committee. I admit roughly 550 people through what I call the administrative review process, and the admissions committee (the faculty committee) admits about another 200 or so. So, we end up admitting about 700 to 750 people. The admissions committee also structures a waiting list, and then everyone else is denied, either administratively or by the Committee.

according to lsac, they admitted just over 800 last year. just thought I'd throw that in there for a little extra hope.askyemcdonald wrote:Interview with Dean Tom:
