So you think it's enough for just the coming year to buy:

Grey sheath
Navy sheath
Grey blazer
Navy blazer
Black pencil skirt
Black pumps (would grey be better for pumps/skirt?)
(Anything else?)

I have plenty of blouses and pants. If I could spend $400 or less, that'd be great (I may have to buy it in shifts, lol) but of course, I'd like to get things that I won't have to replace. I'm going to be really poor really soon!
Yeah, that definitely sounds like enough - it's not like people will be keeping track of you at different events and will notice if you wear the same outfits a lot. Plus with all your blouses, it'll be easy to mix and match.

Only thing I'd add would be some nice flats!
I'd do one more pencil skirt in a different color...maybe navy or even white/tan just for more variety.

 Are suits really necessary? I feel like I have a pretty solid work wardrobe, but I've never owned/felt the need to own a suit. I usually go for blazer/dress or blazer/blouse/skirt and feel like it accomplishes the same level of formality, plus is comfier (I hate pants).

Thanks guys! The hardest thing for me to do is gonna be paying for shoes. Currently, the most expensive shoes in my closet are ones I wear to the gym, lol. The rest are pretty much $30 shoes from Target. :)

You will probably need a suit for 1L moot court stuff (which will probably be required as part of your LRW class), but that won't be till the end of the year. You will also need a suit for interviews for summer jobs, which will probably start in December (depends a little on the job, but suit is safest for everything). Also if you do mock interviews through your school to prepare you're supposed to wear a suit. Your school may also have business formal events/receptions, although skirt/dress + blazer combos may be fine (this will vary by school).

Also, a suit doesn't require pants - skirt suits are fine and are actually the more conservative choice.

Thank you for coming and adding more informed insight.
:D Don't mean to butt in - it just seemed like one piece of semi-concrete info that could help.

Yes! Thank you! I hadn't even thought about some of that.

Maybe a couple of nice sheath dresses, a blazer or two and some good quality conservative pumps? (All on sale, of course, and if anyone knows of an inexpensive, but decent quality store brand, let me know! I looked at an article that listed an acceptable, cheap brand as Ann Taylor, and I was like... riiiiiggghhht)

I figure for most meetings/events we need to attend as 1Ls, I can get away with wearing things I already own. Honestly though, would anyone know or care if I showed up for something in a blazer I got on sale for $45 at The Limited? I figure the rules are no cleavage, no trendy shoes, and dress/skirt lengths not shorter than a couple inches above the knee.

Is this anything I even need to be concerned with yet? :)
For the last few months I have been checking my local thrift and consignment stores once a week for suits. I found a designer dress suit that I plan to use for interviews. I spent $8. I didn't even need to get it tailored! If you start looking now you will probably find something before the OCIs. You can try craigslist, yerdle, Facebook... If you are close to an upscale outlet you might have luck there. I found amazing Theory slacks for a little over $100 at the Neiman Marcus outlet. The trick is to plan ahead and check back often.

I'll have to keep an eye on the swanky neighborhood thrift shops! I have never been in a Neiman Marcus Last Call store. Is the selection consistently decent or is it a matter of getting lucky? The closest one is a couple hours away, is it worth the drive?

No, it is not worth the drive. Their selection is hit or miss. The first time I went I found too much. The next time I couldn't find anything. If you are in the area you should check it out otherwise just look locally.

Same here. Never have I ever pierced any part of my body (despite my TLS namesake).

I've smoked a cigar and my ears are pierced so I'm down to 8. Never have I ever snuck out at night.
Ears pierced, never snuck out, so 9.

Never have I ever gotten a tattoo!

Wait, can I get a definition for what qualifies as sneaking out at night?

I've never gotten a tattoo, though!
