Re: UNC Law c/o 2018 (2014-15 cycle)
After visiting both Carolina and Wake, it seemed that Wake had stronger clinics and externship possibilities in criminal law than UNC. While I really am looking forward to attending Chapel Hill and feel they had much better employment statistics especially given that they have a larger class than Wake as well, I'm worried that I won't be able to go after criminal law.
Any current students speak to the criminal law possibilities?

I know that UNC offers in-state tuition for OOS students for their 2L and 3L years, but I also heard that it is very, very difficult to gain residency.
I have been offered a nice scholarship and this offer would look great if it was accompanied by in-state tuition.
Any thoughts on the ease/difficulty of becoming a North Carolina Resident?
Thanks!
As a current 1L OOS, the process to apply for in-state has been very easy and the administrators have actually been really helpful. On the school's website, you can access the residency application form and see exactly what it is the school is looking for. But, essentially, you really need to show a solid 12-month paper trail of you being in NC and not another state. So if you want to have in-state by 2L year, I recommend moving to Chapel Hill a little earlier and getting a license/vehicle registration/voter id as soon as possible. It really is an easy process and all of the 2Ls I know who did this, received in-state for their second year. This is what really made it worth spending OOS $ for just one year to go to Carolina.

Hey guys!! I just got my acceptance about a week ago and they gave me until 4/17 to deposit. Do you think that means I'm supposed to head back about scholly by then, or that I'm not going to get any?
Really hoping to join you all this fall

Anyone know if UNC will negotiate at all. I deposited yesterday, but indiana(my second choice) came around and gave me a huge scholarship increase to beat my COA at UNC.

When I asked for an increase, they basically said that they're not in the position to increase scholarships right now but that they may do so in the future.LVbucknell wrote:Anyone know if UNC will negotiate at all. For those that have paid the seat deposit: Have you guys received any notification of deposit other than the email receipt that is generated after payment for the seat deposit?

Yes, UNC sent me an e-mail about two days after letting me know the first deposit was paid for. In the e-mail it said to verify that it was noted on the status checker, so maybe check that too?Traveller wrote:For those that have paid the seat deposit: Have you guys received any notification of deposit other than the email receipt that is generated after payment for the seat deposit?

For those who made it to Admit day yesterday, how was it? Were you all sold on the program? Unfortunately I couldn't make it yesterday but I'd love to hear a little bit about it.

I paid my deposit on Thursday morning and have yet to hear back from them. My status checker has also not been updated yet for the first deposit. I wouldn't worry about it though, I'm just assuming that they'll email everyone on MondayTraveller wrote:For those that have paid the seat deposit: Have you guys received any notification of deposit other than the email receipt that is generated after payment for the seat deposit?

Wake student here. Criminal law is pushed a good deal here, or at least it seems that way, but your chance at a DA/PD job are probably equal at either place. I'd go to whichever school is cheaper if you're pretty set on criminal law.NoOneImportant wrote:After visiting both Carolina and Wake, it seemed that Wake had stronger clinics and externship possibilities in criminal law than UNC. I just got mine yesterday! It's really nice for a free shirt. Also, I'm still looking for a room mate, $390 in a 4bd/4ba apartment, water and electricity included in rent, on the bus line to the law school. Message me if you're interested!Wasr wrote:Doing the same thing hahaLVbucknell wrote:still anxiously checking my mailbox every dayWatfordForTheWin wrote:Did anyone ever get their free UNC Law shirt for filling out that survey? Re: UNC Law c/o 2018 (2014-15 cycle)
I'm wrapping up year 2 at UNC and have known a number of people who have done externships with prosecutor's and PD offices (e.g. Wake County and the state AG's office). For clinics, I think we do only have one that's pertinent to criminal law practice, the juvenile justice clinic though that appears to be pretty serious defense work. Also, have you looked at the available externship placements? See http://www.law.unc.edu/academics/externship/sites/NoOneImportant wrote:After visiting both Carolina and Wake, it seemed that Wake had stronger clinics and externship possibilities in criminal law than UNC. I also know that a number of DA's and PD's offices come for OCI.
That said, there are number of great professors who do crim law here, and there's a huge alumni network on both the defense and prosecution sides. If you plan on practicing in NC, UNC is the place to be and a clinic or two more at Wake is hardly a good reason not to go to UNC—particularly if price is more or less equal or in favor of UNC.
