I submitted everything less than two weeks ago.

It's hard to elaborate without giving away too many details. The grant aid is about the same as Yale, and Stanford will require significantly more debt (which is not completely explained by the higher COL in Palo Alto when doing the calculations). But the parental and student contributions are dramatically different in each package. So completely confused.

The grant aid is about the same as Yale, and Stanford will require significantly more debt (which is not completely explained by the higher COL in Palo Alto when doing the calculations). Hmmm sounds confusing... well here's to hoping that SLS releases the aid packages with the least grant money first!

She is in charge of financial aid (her title is both admissions and financial aid) - that being said, I doubt she gets involved unless their is a very unique case or something

Boom. ASW tix purchased for me and the wife. Still no info on finaid, but hoping for and assuming the best. If it's low, we may have to change course and go to UChi's ASW, but for now, we are planning on being in Palo Alto in a few weekends. We had a 20% off Southwest coupon that expired last night, so that's why we pulled the plug.

OK, I was able to to access my aid letter just now.

I'm also VERY confused... especially when compared to Yale. The breakdowns are much more descriptive in Yale's aid letter, and almost non-existent in Stanford's.

Basic info without giving away literally all my privacy, I'm a poor grad student with very little savings to speak of, single, no spouse or children, but I have relatively well-off parents (200+), only child, age 27 when I start (so 50% parental contribution).

Stanford's cost of attendance was tabbed at 82K versus Yale's 75K. After a base package of government loans for both schools, Yale required parental contribution, and gave me what was left in a straight up grant. Stanford didn't indicate what the expected parental contribution was, but simply asked me to take everything else in a separate graduate loan.

Well that made my decision easy: an itty-bitty of money versus literally no money with a high cost of living...

Dang this a bummer, it seems like Stanford this year isn't quite as generous as they have been said to be in the past, where one could typically expect H or Y * 1.5 in grant.

Dang this a bummer, it seems like Stanford this year isn't quite as generous as they have been said to be in the past, where one could typically expect H or Y * 1.5 in grant.

Made this a very tough choice.

I just got my letter too. I have to say I am pretty pleased. They came pretty damn close to taking COA minus 39k and giving me the rest in fellowship. Not exactly, but this is going to be a very hard offer to top by any other school.

you should email stanford with yale's offer. stanford has matched counter-offers in the past.

haha sorry sorry, i meant it sounds like *some* people are not getting any aid. I read pacificas post above as saying she was given a base package of govt loans (ie stafford loans) and then was told to cover the gap between 82K and 21K with gradplus loans. Sorry - I might have completely misinterpreted here, but still no email yet. didnt have to send anything actually to SLS right just list them as a school on fafsa and need?
