This may have been asked/answered but are you signed up for Candidate Referral Service? Can't hurt to e-mail them or anything, but I think they grant strictly based on searching that.
Yes, I am. I've been granted fee waivers from schools with higher medians and higher rankings then Cornell, also. Too bad Cornell is my first choice, and I may end up having to pay them to apply!
Hm, very strange. Well I hope you get your waiver. Given that it's your top choice, are you dead set on NYC biglaw?
I hope I do too! No, I am actually applying to the PhD/JD program in Developmental Psychology and Law. There are very few of these programs around the country, and Cornell seems to have the most integrated, with Psych professors researching things closest to my interests. Unfortunately, the programs each require applications to EACH part separately...doubling the cost. That's where the fee waiver comes in...
Is Cornell your top choice?

What do you want to do with a PhD/JD?

At the most basic level, I want to study the psychological and behavioral effects of prisons on non-violent offenders. I also plan on practicing law somewhere down the road--public defense most likely. It is unlikely that I'd be able to spark any change in our prison system, but maybe with the law degree I'll be able to keep a few non-violent folk out of that environment.

Good move, discrediting the other applicants. But TWIST: they need their gays for dat diversity, so it won't matter.

How exactly do you plan on paying off loans?

Well the PhD would probably be fully funded, no point in ever pursing one that isn't.

The PhD is fully funded. Northwestern (one of the other schools I am applying to) also fully funds the law portion. Cornell is in the process of "attempting to get the funds" to also automatically fully fund the law portion of the dual program for those accepted. I'm kind of doubtful that it will happen at Cornell though. The law programs at the other schools with the dual degree are below my numbers...so maybe I'll get some $$ from those ones.
Either way it will just be law school loans that I'll be dealing with, and I will be dealing with those regardless of whether I pursue the dual degree or not.

It's not my top choice, but I would still love to go there. The weather and small town don't scare me off, as I am used to both.
