More talk about ASW. Wasn't able to make it out bc the wife is deploying and I am savoring the last few weeks I have with her before she flies out. I would love to hear everyones impressions!

Anybody else get the email about merit scholarship consideration this morning? It almost seemed like they were implying that sending a LOCI would increase the size of the award you would receive.

Didn't get it, either. I'm a little disappointed but not that surprised since I'm a super splitter. Any thoughts on whether I could leverage my UVA or NYU acceptances to get some money from GULC?

I don't think so. It was a sort of a note to say "We have a feeling you got into better schools and won't attend GULC no matter how much money we give to you. Prove to us that this is not the case."
Therefore, because of your academic achievements, you are among a select group of our admitted students that the Committee on Scholarship would like to consider for possible scholarship funding. ... It also would be helpful to the Committee’s deliberations if you could provide us with some updated information. We know it’s early, but we are interested in knowing such things as where Georgetown fits into your thinking and what level of funding would make a difference in your decision.
I know GULC has a rep for being a bit stingy with money so maybe this is an attempt by them to focus scholarships towards people likely to attend?

I'm definitely going to write something, just not sure exactly what yet.

Didn't get it either. I wouldn't go to GULC with no money, despite how much I love the school.

I got the invite. Are you others who got it above medians? Also did they send out this email last year?

I got it too. I'm really unsure what to write for the "what level of funding would make a difference" part. I've never had a school ask me to quote my own price lol.

I got it and already answered (bored at work). I just wrote a quick message thanking them for considering me, saying obviously COA would be a huge factor in my final decision and told them explicitly about other offers I have. Figured might as well lay it all on the table and see what they say! :)

EDIT: Although I do agree, reading the email the first time it felt really uncomfortable. The line "we are interested in knowing such things as where Georgetown fits into your thinking" made it sound like they'd given up on us.

They also want to know "what level of funding" would make us attend. Did you state an actual number? lol

Also I think Gtown's max is half tuition... correct me if I'm wrong

I didn't give them a number, I just told them I had a full tuition at a similarly ranked school and that I am not making any final decisions until I can compare all aid packages because COA is obviously a very important factor.

If we didn't receive the e-mail, does it mean we're not being awarded any merit aid?

I think it just means we aren't at the top of their list. I'm sure some people might still receive it, but it appears that the email is going out to those applicants who GULC is most interested in and therefore needs a better idea of how much money they should offer in order to secure those students as part of the incoming class.

I just took the plunge and called the admissions office to ask. The woman I spoke to said this absolutely does not mean we won't be considered, and that if I want to be considered for a merit scholarship I should send an email to the hotline address expressing that interest, and that a scholarship committee person would get back to me.

I'm still scared to email them about it .___. Some merit aid would be nice... but I still feel I wouldn't get any haha

Same here. It almost doesn't seem worth trying.

Good for you! Do you think they would seriously consider these emails? Also, do you think leverage with offers from lower ranked schools would help?

TLS conventional wisdom (gleaned from past years) is that GULC considers its peers to be MVP and up, so I doubt they would match a school lower than them. Still, always worth a shot.

Responded to the merit e-mail while at work. Nothing long winded. Short and frank responses to their questions.

Thanks! I think they would at least consider them, and the woman I spoke with seemed genuinely concerned that an admitted student would think she didn't have a shot at a merit scholarship just because she didn't get the email this morning.

My situation may be unique because my numbers are pretty weird. I plan to send the email because I think they may have underestimated my chances at higher-ranked schools (understandably!). As a super-splitter, at least two of the schools to which I've been admitted have underestimated my eventual success at higher-ranked schools, considering the size of their scholarship offer or lack thereof. I'm hoping that if I tell GULC I've been accepted at NYU and UVA, they might reevaluate what they might need to offer. Maybe? I don't think they expect an applicant like me to get into higher-ranked schools--heck, I certainly didn't expect to get into higher-ranked schools!

Either way, it can't hurt to at least send the email with the most compelling argument that you can come up with for them to give you merit aid.

I think you've hit it right on the mark - how could they not consider you highly with both NYU and UVA as options?

So we should mention the higher-ranked schools we've gotten into, even if there's no scholly offer?

I'm on the same boat guys. I got into Michigan, and if i had to pay sticker at both, I'd take Michigan. Should I express this in more eloquent terms?

Also, what e-mail address are we sending this to?

The hotline one from the admissions emails. Not sure if it's a public email address. so I'm not going to post it.
