YS? And I know its not YP (at least traditional YP) b/c then they would waitlist. I just don't understand what theyre doing.... My only theory is that they would really rather be ranked 10. or maybe even 11.

+1. Michigan is my true love and I'd consider going there no matter where else I got in (save Harvard). I wrote a Why Mich but it seems that many others who were not admitted did as well...

+2. 78%, but I haven't heard back from anyone yet and Mich was one of only two schools I applied to that had me as an auto-admit. I might throw out extra apps at deadline if I haven't heard anything yet...

It's not going much better the other way. 45% here, Why Mich, love shown via email and whatnot as well (quasi-LOCI), -really- strong statements that Mich was my #1 choice ... and apparently an incoming rejection.

Too high seems to be YP/Reject, too low is reject, but I'm not sure where the sweet spot is. Maybe they're just using a dartboard approach.

Hmm I also got the whole we've reviewed your file and will get back to you email. I'm above both 75th's by a decent margin, is the general consensus that this is a YP tactic? Michigan is actually one of my higher choices for personal reasons.

I'm a splitter and I got that email too, so I doubt it's for YP.

Just looking at the graphs on LSN, it doesn't seem this cylce is THAT crazy. It actually looks like they're sticking with their medians and percentiles. I'm pretty sure every year there's a bunch of high numbers applicants that get rejected, there's just more of them this year because of the high number of applications.

I think UofM might actually be trying to fall in the rankings....

Im rather confused as to why they already admitted many people below or at median and then straight up rejected many people above 75%. Do they not have enough confidence in themselves as a school to think that maybe, just maybe, someone with above a 170 would want to go there? and not just as a backup option?

when did everyone who just got dinged submit? i wonder if they just accepted too many "median" people early and then just didn't have very many seats left by january (like they anticipated an increase in apps, but not as big as actually happened)? pure speculation.
