1) While Wash U is one of my top choices, I cannot at this time guarantee my matriculation

O.o there is something definitely off with that. I'm from st. Louis and plan to split an apartment with a friend. 2 bedroom apartments are usually around $800/month. The cost of living in Missouri is very cheap, I plan to spend around 5k for housing per year. With food and personal expenses I doubt I'll end up anywhere over 10k.

The only thing I can think of is that they are factoring in books, other fees, transportation, personal expenses, and assuming you will be paying for your apartment all by yourself for some reason lol (which still wouldn't be that much I'd think) But I guarantee you, there's no way it costs more than Boston (I live around Boston now and it's twice as expensive for the same size apartment).

The allotted room and board is certainly higher than necessary. There is also $6000 in misc, so obviously you don't need to spend nearly that much.

Yeah no way it's more than Boston?

Room/board $14k?? not a chance. I had a relatively large studio apartment in the cwe my first year here and paid $540 plus $25 in expenses, and now I have a nice two-bedroom in clayton and my half is only $495 plus about $100 or so in expenses (energy/gas/cable/internet)

It's cool WUSTL doesn't undersell how much everything costs like the majority of schools.

How big are your roommates? Could they be easily overpowered by say, 3 admitted students? Just wondering. You know, for choosing a law school reasons.

lol my roommates and I live in Central West End. But it was harder to find a 3-bedroom apartment. There are SO many options if you're looking for 2-bedroom. We actually kind of regret signing our lease so early because there were apparently better deals.

Ultimately things like cost of living are minor considerations in light of the long-term career benefits of picking a certain school. So I hesitate to pitch the low living costs too fervently when advocating for WUSTL. But there is definitely an advantage to having one less thing to stress about as a 1L. You're gonna have to keep up with your school work, maintain relationships with peers/mentors, network with lawyers/alumni, and it's just easier when you don't have to obsessively monitor your bank account to make sure you don't go over budget.

My roommates and I decided that we would rather spend a little more for an apartment and not have to deal with shady landlords or decrepit facilities etc... That's not something you could necessarily do in a city like NYC for example because it's hard to find a nexus between places you can afford and high quality housing.

People excel in their 1L year by razor thin margins, especially as you approach the upper cohorts. Will having fewer things to worry about guarantee you a spot in the top X%? Absolutely not. But it will help.
