I've actually been trying to decide how much extra I'd be willing to pay to go to WUSTL rather than UIUC, IU-B, or Iowa for free or close to it. For me, wanting to stay in the Midwest and not caring about getting biglaw, it's not a bad deal, I don't think. I really loved WUSTL, but I'm trying not to let the nice admissions staff cloud my judgement since they do, after all, get paid to be nice to us. That said, if I can snag at least half-tuition there, I would most likely go.

Seriously, I have a friend paying sticker at Davis. She's NOW having her breakdown. Sheesh.

I tried, it was a lost cause.

Sorry for bringing up the debt topic! I just thought it'd be relevant since schollies are gonna come out soon

I often hear the argument "I'd rather owe 250K with a job than 100K without one." And from a risk-minimization assessment this does kind of make sense, and I would agree with it if the attrition for BigLaw associates wasn't so bad. I've been following the market for a year..literally reading any bank report, gossip, publication I can get my hands on..and BigLaw is just getting smaller. They're cutting costs and the business model itself is sort of falling apart.

The difference between 250k and 100k...is monstrous. Yes 100k is a lot..but 250k with interest? The difference is monumental. Someone PMed me expressing their skepticism about how I could forego NU for WUSTL considering NU's advantage in placement (a reasonable and understandable question)

NU places 50% in BigLaw as of last year's NLJ stats. So lets assume they maintain that and that i'm part of the luckier half. I think 2/3 of associates leave or are laid off by year 4 or 5 something, which is right around the time you start making a meaningful dent in your loans. So that gives me a 16.5% chance of 1. getting BigLaw and 2. lasting long enough to make a dent in my loans. I'm not paying 270K for a 16.5% chance at achieving zero net-worth.
(50% x 33%= 16.5%)

Yes it's a lot of guessing and estimation, but so is any argument that 0L's can make regarding debt/employment. We have to assume that the average stats will apply to us. It's the same logic that drives the "250k with job is better than 100k without one" argument.

Anyway, I'd be willing to incur anywhere between 100-120k for law school, no matter which one it is.

Edit: XS20, sorry I missed the discussion about your friend while I was writing this..that actually really makes me sad.. not in a pretentious/condescending way..but truly.

You'd be surprised how the general public views law school as this very tough thing where you memorize every law for 3 years but then you become a lawyer and lawyers make a lot of money.

I tried explaining to my boss how I probably wasn't going to Baylor b/c even with the Scholly I'd still be at least 150k in debt, and she just replied "Yeah but you're gonna make so much money afterwards!"

Also, she posted a status about getting into John Marshall the other day like "I TOLD YOU GUYS I COULD DO IT!!", and got 50+ likes and all these people freaking out acting like she got into Harvard or something. For some reason people around here who don't know anything about rankings think JM is prestigious.

It has a person's name. Sounds kinda prestigious, moreso than a school that has to have "IN ST. LOUIS" in its official name anyway.
