Re: Georgetown c/o 2016 Applicants (2012-2013)
Since I didn't even get the 45K I was speculating about I went ahead and withdrew. I think I was one of about two TLSers who defended GULC through this whole process and would have actually considered attending (at a resonable price of course). Considering I jumped through all their hoops and gave them heartfelt responses and the fact that I have been accepted to higher ranked schools with superior employment prospects with $$ I can't help but feel a bit slighted. Oh well. I don't really see most of the people who got offered money yesterday attending either. As I said before I'm sure they will have no shortage of people lining up to pay sticker. But it will be interesting to see what the number composition of the class will be after all the dust settles this cycle. 168 median at best, maybe even a 167?

I know that we've already covered this ITT, but... I really don't think they eliminated folks based on how much they asked for after the first email. In the email, they also asked about how seriously you were considering Georgetown. I used the initial email to write a "Why Georgetown" essay with only the final paragraph addressing the funding request (with a justification based on my other offers and career goals). I also asked for $120,000 and was subsequently selected to write the 150-word follow up, and others ITT asked for more and received the follow-up email. (I was selected as an "Alternate" for merit aid after submitting my 150-word response, btw).Cicero76 wrote:
They hadn't allocated any money yet. This was after the first email, when we were all supposed to respond to them with what level of money it would take for us to attend there. I had said in my email withdrawing that I thought it was kind of ridiculous to do it "initial selection " based on nothing except my answer to their question. The lady on the phone was trying to explain that the initial selection had actually been based on a thorough review of our application and a "holistic process." But if that were so, why didn't they "holistically review" my application before sending out the initial invitation to apply for merit aid? Once They sent out that invitation, the only new info they had to reject me was the amount I wanted. The lady never explained that.
I really don't see how this differs substantially than the process at other schools. At Northwestern, for example, you are basically asked to write a "Why NU" essay and an essay justifying why you should receive merit and need aid. The only difference here is that if Georgetown knows flat out that they aren't willing to give you merit aid based on a "holistic" review of your application, they don't waste your time by asking you write essays.
I concede that Georgetown could have done a better job making the process more transparent so that applicants/admitted students would know definitively whether or not they had a chance at merit aid. People shouldn't have to wait around wondering when merit aid offers will go out if they did not receive the initial merit aid email.

If people are confused by this merit aid process, it's because Georgetown's actions are very confusing. The alternate email says to write if I have any questions. I have half a mind to send an email back bluntly asking "What were you guys trying to accomplish here? What was the point of this 150 word essay and what were you looking for in it? Why string people along for so long just to offer a significant portion of them nothing? Etc." We'll see how that goes.

Yeah, I much prefer G-town's process to NU's merit aid application. Those essays sucked big time. The answer to Georgetown's request was easy (and fun) to write.bluecouch wrote:At Northwestern, for example, you are basically asked to write a "Why NU" essay and an essay justifying why you should receive merit and need aid. Ideally Tahiti, but I guess I'd settle for Hawaii.

No indication I was being considered for scholarship. Would need a lot to convince me to attend.

Hi everyone I'm new here.
Could somebody explain the general merit-aid process that seems to be so unpopular? Do you get an email to let you know you are being considered or do you have to apply for something? I got an acceptance letter last week but didn't hear anything about scholarships and didn't see any merit info on the asw.

You receive an email indicating that you are one of a select few applicants being considered for $. GULC asks where it fits into your thinking, what scholarship offers you have, and what amount of money you would want to attend GULC. Most people also use this response as an opportunity to write what is effectively a LOCI highlighting what you like about GULC. Within about three weeks you'll either be notified that they cannot offer you any aid or you have been selected as a finalist. Finalists are asked to write 150 words (the last prompt was something about your biggest mistake IIRC). A few weeks after this, you'll be notified of your award or that you were selected as an alternate to receive scholarship money. It seems that everyone on TLS who received a merit award has gone through this process, so getting that first email initiating the process is necessary but (obviously) not sufficient to get merit $.
HTH (also this might help understand why peeps are not happy with GULC)

Did anyone here apply for the Global Law Scholars program? Any idea when we'll hear back about that?

I just replied to the merit scholarship e-mail that they sent on Friday.
Here's hoping I didn't ask for too much and they don't ding me for that.

Was just invited to interview with an alumni. Sent my app 1/12. I don't remember when I went complete but I've had a couple of updates since then.
What is the longest that those who went through this were asked to drive? I live in Alabama, and don't imagine that there are many GULC alums here. Also, any details on the interview experience would be appreciated! I read a little about it by looking back through the thread but any more info would be great.

Hey ALgooner, I did an on-campus interview with the dean, so I don't know if this is necessarily applicable for alumni interviews, but nonetheless I hope it helps!ALgooner wrote:Was just invited to interview with an alumni. The interview I attended seemed to be judging the applicants on their ability to function in a group setting and think on their feet. The dean gave us scenarios, a very short amount of time to confer with our groups, then quizzed us on our arguments and our ability to stand by them.
Overall, it seems that getting asked to interview is a positive sign for your application. Good luck, I hope it goes well!

What are thoughts on George Washington Law vs. Georgetown? Obviously, I know that GULC is ranked higher, but GW gave me a scholly....trying to decide if it is worth it. FWIW, I want to do legislative counsel/government work, so I dont really expect to make tons of money post graduation.
