Where is everyone planning on living?

My heart and last 6 years of my life want me to live downtown, maybe 5 points or City park neighborhood...however, my propensity for procrastination and leaving late and fondness for houses over condos means that Platte Park and Wash Park are the early contenders. If I do wind up there, i'm going to look for 1-2 roomies to share a house in one of those two neighborhoods most likely.

first cycle n00b here and wtf is status checker?

also, I'm legally blind so try not to give me a hard time. no not really, but I'm ready for the jerks on here to make fun. ok go.

I'd upload a screen shot for my best guess, only my emploeyer has a nanny filter that leaves 85% of the awesome internet inaccessible.

a previous post said you were waiting for a LOR so LSAC can send your apps. once your app is complete, DU will send you an email with a password you use to access their status checker. Once my status checker changed from complete to decision processed it took a week to get the acceptance e-mail. Good luck!

I was accepted 2/26 and to date have not heard anything about scholarships. For those of you with experience in this, did you just wait for them to send you the info or did you have to follow up?

The most I've seen is $22k, but I could be wrong.

I'm from NJ and have no idea where to live if I decide on Denver. Can anyone give me ideas so I can check out different neighborhoods when I go to the open house? I'd love to get a head start on this, especially since I don't want to have to fly out to Denver again to figure out an apartment. Thanks!

A month or so ago I had asked a current DU 3L Part-time student about Sturm, and I have been meaning to post her responses, but hopefully this information can be useful to others. I have her email and can ask her more questions if anyone has any questions.

Questions:

1. Why did she chose DU, and would she do it again?
2. How competitive of an atmosphere is DU?
3. How helpful was DU staff regarding 1L & 2L summer and post law school employment?
4. Would she be willing, if she still has them, let me have a copy of her first semester course outlines? I've been reading several books that speak to the importance of the outlines for exam time, and would like to see what they really look like, even though hers may not even apply to classes if I went to DU since it might be different profs and text books, it would be nice to see a completed outline(s).
5. What is the curve?
6. How many hours a day did she spend studying on average? Would she have spent more time?
7. How is 2L and 3L course selection order made? Lottery? Class Rank?
8. Does DU post class rank? How often?
9. What professors would she suggest taking? Conversely, which should be avoided?
10. How many day sections are there for 1L?
11. How is the socratic method? Rough or generally easy if prepare?
12. Would she suggest moving in July or is a couple weeks ahead of time good enough prior to orientation?
13. Any comments she would have that would help me decide if DU is a good choice for me.

Answers:

1. I chose DU because they have a night program and I wanted to work for financial reasons while going to law school. And I love Denver!

2. The evening program isn't very competitive at all; from the stand point of people hiding books or not sharing information, etc. People are competitive from the standpoint of wanting to succeed on exams, but that is to be expected in law school. A pretty friendly environment though.

3. I'm not sure about the staff. I'm currently a 3L but happened to get a job by giving my resume to a friend who worked at my current law firm. I haven't had to search for job placement.

4. Given that my hard drive crashed I'm not sure I have my outlines from first semester. I probably emailed them to my self though so could likely find them. I'm more than happy to give you my outline, but I recommend doing it yourself. I and everyone has their own way of organizing information that works for them.

5. The curve is between a 2.85 and 3.15; meaning the professors have to give grades such that the average or median falls within this GPA. Basically a B.

6. I didn't spend much time studying because I work until I go to class and then I sit in class until 9 or 10 at night. Depending on how tired I am I might read for an hour when I get home. On the weekends I probably spend on avg. like 3 hours/day. It really depends though on the class, the professor, the amount of reading, if you have papers due, etc. I would like to spend more time, but I just don't have it. You will figure it out after your first semester. I don't really even do much of the reading anymore; you just have to feel the class and professor out.

7. Number of units - the more units you have, you get to select courses first. If you have the same number of units, I don't know how they do it.

8. No; they send an email out at the end of each year (May, June) and give you personally your class rank; no one else knows your class rank. BTW - people lie about their grades all the time. First year I did not hear one person say they got a C - that is impossible - people got C's.

9. If you decide to go to DU I'll tell you what professor's to take. Your schedule is made for you your first year anyways - you will not get to pick professor's until your second year.

11. Depends on the professor. Some professor's will hound you and yes, you better be prepared and some don't really care. First year though they do try to play the game, after that it doesn't matter - if you get called on and are not prepared it's no big deal.

12. I don't think it matters. A couple of weeks before orientation is fine. You'll make friends in your classes for sure. I can't really comment on the day section though.

13. DU is expensive but we are moving up in the ranks. I get frustrated with the evening program alot because they don't cater to evening students, but if you are doing the day program you will likely get more help with whatever you need because you can show up at noon, etc. (I can't). Our Bar passage rate was 91% this last July. We have a great bar success program. I know the job market right now sucks for everyone, not just DU grads so I can't really comment on people getting jobs because as of now, not many students can find jobs. First year I would say just do all the reading and yes, make an outline - that is important. Pay attention in class and take good notes - most students are on FB or the internet all class - seriously listen to what the professor says and take good notes. This will allow you to know what to focus on when you make your outline and not get stuck in all the details. If you have the motivation start your outline early - I promise you students will wait to the last minute (my self included) and if you start yours early and get through all the material and can memorize it - you will be ahead of the game! That is a fact! I know this fact, but I still choose to slack off (trust me it's very hard to be disciplined, but if you can do it, you will be better off; much less stress come finals and you will perform better).

just checked the status checker and as of 3/11 a decision has been processed. I haven't received an email, so I'm guessing I'm not in?? Guess I'll just have to wait and find out what comes in the snail mail.

I went "decision processed" on 3/15 and also waiting. I've heard people (with fairly high numbers) have received an acceptance email as late as a week after the status checker changed. So good news is still a possibility. But I'm losing optimism...
