Maybe this is unrelated but couldn't figure a better place to ask.

So I've been accepted to UCI and got a full tuition scholarship to the MBA program at Carnegie Mellon. In all honesty, I'm a little unsure what to do. The obvious question is what do I want to do after school? Do I want to be a lawyer or not?

Anyone have any advice they'd like to impart?

i applied mid january...uci being my number one choice makes the wait that much more exciting.

I applied in mid Dec, but didn't go complete until last week (b/c of my LORs). Congrats to those who have been accepted so far! I'm so envious!

Take the free ride in the MBA. A wider range of job opp's will be open to you and you sound like you aren't convinced you want to be a lawyer. Just read all of TTTsolo's fire and brimstone...if you aren't committed to the legal profession you might just get left behind in this economy.

Besides I want that spot at UCI

Just wondering, what are your LSAT and GPA numbers? What IS UCI accepting.

I am 3.87/162. The lowest admit I have seen is 164/3.1. Most are 3.5+ and 165+

I am a long shot I know, but I am hoping for a waitlist and hoping that most people like lifelesslived turn UCI down for more prestigious options.

Where was I when the memo on UCI came out???

So the app deadline is March 1? I assume this means that my file should be complete by then or no - just submitted?

I am already half way done with law school @ a SoCal Tier 4, but after reading UCI's website, I am ready to start all over.

And yes, I know that sounds nuts.
(I'm currently a part time non trad student, it would not postpone my graduation date)

My absolute biggest frustration in law school thus far is the complete disconnect between NECESSARY interdisciplinary studies and the LAW. The relationships between criminal law and psychology, between Biotech/Food & Drug Law and nutrition, between mental health and the legal profession itself (ethics), between TRUE ethics and ALL areas of the law - not to mention the influence of culture/religion on any ONE of the things mentioned above (just to name a few) are sadly overlooked, and devalued as part of legal education as we know it. Among other things. At least that has been my experience thus far.

My mindset - which is "tell me the rules so I know how to break them" does not seem to fit very well @ a tier 4, where creativity, advocacy, passion and no B.S. seem to take a back seat to the conforming of minds (as opposed to the expansion).

Administration at my school, (and others) remain painfully disconnected from students, and students (most) don't even know who administrators are, much less view them as allies invested in their lives or the quality of their education. You are getting phone calls from Deans? Let me assure you, this is NOT a regular/normal/standard occurrence - unless of course you are in leadership.

UCI sounds like a breath of fresh air that has the potential to bridge the gaps between the "standard" law school education and an "ideal" law school experience - and quite possibly (gasp) ACTUALLY inject a group highly competent, MORE than adequately trained, unusually empathetic, well-rounded, bright and creative graduates into a field that is SORELY in need of it.

THAT'S some trail-blazin' folks.

To me - as idealistic as it sounds - that makes UCI WORTH the risk. (Which I HIGHLY doubt there is much of, since it looks like the ABA is happily contributing marketing efforts to shine a nicely illuminated spotlight on UCI)

I will be calling them first thing in the morning, on my way to my evidence class with a prayer and a pipe dream that it just may NOT be too late for an app and that I stand more than a snowball's chance in hell of gaining admission.


*** and for you "ne'er do wellers" that will inevitably question my gumption or audacity at even remotely entertaining an application to UCI whilst I attend only a 'mere' tier 4 school - our school has had some of the top bar passage rates in the STATE, so you can bet your butt that we are vigorously prepared for bar passage. I started with about 800 classmates. I am ranked with a little over 300 due to attrition rates and transfers. And, once UCI gets the desired number of numbers people offered and admitted, there could, quite possibly be the spots for other 'people that will change the world but didn't do so well on that one little test' - like me.

I have faith that while this program is alot about numbers in order to reach that top 20 goal, that it's also about innovation, drive, raw talent and diversity. I move more mountains in a month than most do in their lifetimes.

Don't be negative. That's the kind of attitude that gives our profession a bad rap.

Clients don't want to hear: "You can't do that."
They want to hear: "If there is any possible way to do that, I'll figure it out."

Also, any word on how many apps they've received? A few posts ago someone said 1,000. Is that true and current?

The UC Regents set the cost, but the school is assuming just over $34,000 a year for California residents, and another $10,000 for out-of-state students, Cannon said.

I just found out that Hastings had raised tuition from 28k to over 32k for next year. Great timing right with the ease of getting loans these days. I blame the state of CA for its budget problems.

Brian Leiter's Law School Rankings website published a study today of the "Top Ten Law Faculties in Scholarly Impact, 2005-2008". UC Irvine made the Top 10! Not bad for a school that hasn't even opened yet.

Too bad quality of the faculty isn't really measured for US News school rankings. Why is that anyway? Doesn't make sense to me.

I'm taking a trip out west to visit the UCI campus on either Monday or Friday next week, if anyone's interested in some pictures/descriptions/anecdotes/etc.

For what it's worth, I visited the campus over Christmas break. of course the place was empty, but like a lot of orange county, it's very suburbany and strip mallish. I felt like I didn't fit into the OC, though if I end up going to UCI, I think I will fit in with the student body.
