mid 170's LSAT, GPA above the 25th but not by much. Texas resident, but did not write a "Why SMU."
I thought the "Why SMU" was required?

Just got the call!

I just checked and you're right; that essay is called "Why SMU," which is funny given my post, and which I didn't remember. I treated it more like a "Why Law," since the prompt was broad enough to allow that.

ETA: Also just got the call! Very excited about this!

You'll have some flexibility for 1L summer, but at OCI for 2L summer you'll find that nearly all the recruiters are seeking summers for their Dallas office. Yes, even BigLaw firms with Dallas offices. Most will explicitly tell you that "multiple offices" aren't allowed (meaning you can't interview with, say, Baker Botts at SMU OCI and request placement in Houston, Austin, or anywhere besides Dallas).
This is not true. Literally 1/4 of all the employers who participated in this year's SMU OCI were interviewing for Houston as well as (or instead of) Dallas. Obviously some of those would tell you that you can only interview for one city, but they tell you that at Texas too.

Further, that underestimates the total number of firms interviewing SMU students because that's only the Dallas OCI and doesn't count the SMU Houston Interview Program in which the CSO sets up an off-campus OCI with Houston firms and Houston offices of BigLaw firms at a Houston hotel.

Between those two programs a friend of mine at SMU got 6 V100 CB in Houston, plus a few others not V100. Of course, if you're interviewing for Houston from SMU, you have to have a good story as to why you want Houston instead of Dallas, especially if you apply for multiple offices.

. . .

ETA: And I don't have any inside info for UH OCI, but I assume the situation is similar, though they may not have a Dallas interview program. The SMU Houston interview program appears to be fairly new.
In addition to the Houston interview program poster mentioned above (which was around 10 firms, if I recall), I know of at least 3 BigLaw firms (Latham, Bracewell, and Baker McKenzie) that their own interview room/schedule for their Houston office at SMU OCI, which is different than applying to a certain firm, e.g., Baker Botts, and saying you'd consider both offices.

There are at least 10 people on law review (between both years) that I know went/are going to Houston for at least part of their 2L SA (so ~10% of law review folks), but I'm sure there are a few others, including people not on SMU LRA.

But, I agree with the general premise that if you are choosing between SMU and UH (assuming similar cost), go to the school in the city you want to end up in. It's not impossible to cross over, but it certainly makes it easier for job opportunities by taking advantage of networking, proximity, and alumni connections.

How many firms go to SMU OCI? How deep into class do they typically hire from?

60-75 first round, 12-20 second round. You'll need to be top third to have a shot at an OCI spot, typically. The bigger and nicer the firm, the higher up you need to be.

Admitted via status checker. (Also received acceptance phone call, but I had checked my status checker before they called).

Congratulations! I'm pretty jealous because my status is just sitting at "Complete" since 9/18. Woof.

You will. I'd guess around $25,000/year

What are some examples of the smaller firms that go to OCI?
