Hi guys, I need your opinion... Hofstra Law vs. New York Law -- Can't decide- liked both campuses and students that I met both had great things to say about their school.

I just withdrew and freed up $47,650 in tuition money. Good luck to those still waiting, I hope you get what you want.

I would go for the better bargain (whichever is cheaper). That's what I did.Burton8219 wrote:Hofstra... I received an e-mail and then a packet came in the mail a few days later! Did you send them a LOCI?

Sent a couple. Visited as well. This is a second career for me and I'm a very
non-traditional candidate. Maybe there isn't any room for another
"old" student! Will hang in there though. I'm very passionate about what I want to do.

They upped my scholarship to 20k today!
Meanwhile, I'm still listed as PT Day ... I didn't think they gave out scholarships to PT students but I guess they do!
Do you guys think there's a chance they'd switch me to FT if I ask nicely?
My financial situation has changed and I no longer need to work the extra hours.

Tell them you know of a lovely woman with close to the same stats as you, with a graduate degree as well--and that she will gladly take your PT spot if they switch you to full time!
Congrats on the extra scolarship money!!
I'm reserving all my prayers for my mom who is currently in heart surgery while I sit here waiting--but after that--hoping to get off of that WL!

Is there any possibilities that more scholarship money will be distributed?

I got more literally two days ago, so I don't see why not.simplythebest wrote:Is there any possibilities that more scholarship money will be distributed?
I think that as people that are scholarship recipients are accepted off other waitlists and notify Hofstra that they won't be attending, more of that money will be freed up and can be reallocated.

Hmmm, I'm guessing it would be too much to ask for some $$ if they admitted me off the WL?!?!

No, it wouldn't. You should definitely ask! Until you send them your seat deposit you have some leverage, because it's in their best interest that someone they offer a space to accepts. If they don't accept it hurts their yield, and therefore their rankings. It'll also help you if you were offered money at other schools. Tell them what you were offered at other schools, and ask them, politely of course, to match it. I've done this with other schools and it works. And don't be afraid to contact the Dean directly. Remember, THEY want YOU, and they need you, maybe more than you need them. A lot of universities make money off their professional programs and use that money to fund their undergraduate programs. Don't let them fool you into thinking they're doing you this big favor by taking you off the waitlist and adopt a "beggars can't be choosers" mentality.DreamLaw0915 wrote:apslaw1031 wrote:I got more literally two days ago, so I don't see why not.simplythebest wrote:Is there any possibilities that more scholarship money will be distributed?

Are you above 1 or both medians? If so, you deserve some cash. If not, ask anyway.

Should we maybe just wait to see if scholarships are still being awarded?

No, be aggresive and actively negotiate using other acceptances and scholarships.

I agree with Nova. As far as I'm concerned our education has already begun. Learn to be aggressive, proactive, confident and shrewd now, not three months from now.

Re: Hofstra Law Class of 2015
Its nice that everyone on this message board is so optimistic. I just wanted to share my experience with Hofstra's financial aid rep at the Admitted Students Open House...I was told directly that the school offers more scholarships than it can really pay out b/c they really don't expect everyone to accept and that they don't reallocate scholarship funds to those who withdraw their acceptances. Then I read on this site about people who received increased scholarships offers (meaning they already were offered some scholarship funds with their initial acceptances). I called the school to try and negotiate some scholarship money (I was accepted with no scholarship). I mentioned that the admissions committee did not receive my letter of recommendations at the time a decision was made on my application. I was placed on hold for by the dean's assistant while they reviewed my file which included a formal email request. After less than 10 mins I was declined scholarship consideration so I withdrew on the phone.blurose wrote:No, it wouldn't. You should definitely ask! In off of the waitlist via status checker! Very happy! Have no other info, though, haven't received an email or letter yet.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
