Between a 4.0/180 and a 3.9/177 there's little marginal difference, at which point LsOR, resumes, and statements will become the biggest determining factor. So if the 4.0/180 had a good PS and decent LsOR and 3.9/177 had a great PS and stellar LsOR, my money would be on the latter.

At any rate I bet someone with perfect numbers would tend to be on the more arrogant side of things, expecting to glide through on their untarnished record. I imagine that seldom comes off well for adcomms.

That being said, checking in--here goes nothing!

But seriously yeah everything KissMyAxe said is on point.

Gonna apply unless my September retake isn't as good as I'm hoping it will be! We'll find out October 20th, I guess.

I was just going through the faculty directory (shoot me; a person can dream) and came across Mirjan R. Damask, whose bio concludes thusly:
In 2005, he was appointed Amicus Curiae of the International War Crimes Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in the matter of transferring cases to domestic courts. In 2009, he was presented the lifetime achievement award by the American Society of Comparative Law. [...] He does counseling work on foreign law problems for law firms in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington.

In 2010 he was appointed special adviser to the Prime Minister of Croatia, and agent of the Republic of Croatia before the International Court of Justice, heading a team of Croatian and English lawyers in the case of Croatia v. Serbia.

That's seriously just the tip of the ice Berg. Of course, everyone knows Guido Calabresi, Harold Koh, and Amy Chua, all of whom are brilliant and super nice. But pretty much every professor here is the absolute best in their field. Noah Messing, the legal writing instructor, won pretty much every writing award possible while here, then became an extremely successful appellate litigator in DC, before becoming legal counsel for Hillary Clinton. There's also a fascinating talk the three YLS alum justices gave in 2014. You can learn a lot since they're all brilliant, but it's also interesting the moderator knows them well enough to call Justice Alito Sam. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FarPBQah5Io

Speaking of those talks, it's crazy how many amazing people come here to talk. Judge Kozinski is coming for a talk tomorrow. Friday, we're having about 10 justices from supreme courts around the world coming to talk, as well as Justice Breyer. Plus dozens of other prominent legal scholars and authors, all of which have free food as well.

As OP I'd like to ask the first super-duper nit picky 250 question of the year.

Do hyphenated words count as 1 or 2 words?!

MS word counts them as 1, but I suppose I must play it safe and assume 2. I'm not sure there's a conclusive answer out there.

For what it's worth MS Word counts hyphenated words as single words, so that might be a helpful start

For what it's worth, you can change the MS Word setting to count hyphenated words as multiple ones. So it doesn't hold much value. Let's be safe and count them as separate words. Or else Murphy's Law entails our application will be read by the one professor who counts the words in the 250 essay individually.

(Not you, pretzel. You're going to be admitted directly by Dean Rangappa.)

I tend to agree with you (not about my admission lololol) but about playing it safe. Damn it. Two words it is.

I think you are missing the light and lol vibes of this discussion, friend.

No one is having a panic attack about word counts, but I think it's a reasonable question. We're trying to go into law, a field in which the minutia matter.

yeah no one itt is really sweating it that much. a lot of this is ppl just performing neuroticism ironically to play into the whole "omg law school applicants are so neurotic" shtick for the lols. and I dont think that simply asking about whether hyphenated words count as 1 or 2 is per se ridiculously neurotic.

make sure you don't write "yale 250" at the top of the page. that's 4 words you could use in your essay

If you hyphenate it it's only 1 word though

yale 250 protips:

-increase font size to 20 to give your words a weightier, substantial feel
-wingdings aren't words
-title it "yale 350" instead

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
