Is living in Nashville as expensive as it looks? I've been checking out rent close to campusarklaw13 wrote:Vandy 3L here. Also available to answer any questions.

If you want to live near campus, you'll probably need a roommate to make it affordable, although there are some places that one person could afford. If you're willing to drive a bit, there are a lot of affordable areas. I've lived out in the suburbs the whole time, and it's worked out fine.Scalvert wrote:Is living in Nashville as expensive as it looks? Which neighborhood/apt bldg do you live in? (Or which ones that are in walking distance are affordable? $775 is comparable to what I'm paying now for a 550 sq ft single, so that would be great) Pm me if you'd rather.Generally wrote:I live a walk from campus in a studio for $775. If you want to live close to campus in a one bedroom its going to cost you a pretty penny, and rents seem to be going up. I currently live in the Bristol which is super convenient for walking to school and going to Demonbreun street bars. However, as Arklaw said, if you are willing to live farther away like Germantown you can get good deals.Scalvert wrote:Is living in Nashville as expensive as it looks? Hi everyone! For those who have interviewed, or who have one scheduled, how soon after requesting the interview did you hear back about scheduling it?

Rent is high near campus, and is going up quickly all over the city. Im a May 2015 grad who found a 1 bedroom off of whitbridge road in 2012 for $630 a month, and it only went up to $640 by the time I left last May. It was about a 15-20 minute drive from campus, though I rode the bus all three years, which was around 45 minutes by the time I got to and from stops.GreenJay wrote:If you want to live close to campus in a one bedroom its going to cost you a pretty penny, and rents seem to be going up. If you live on a line that goes by campus, the bus isnt a bad option. Nashville MTA is decent as far as public transit goes, and the buses are clean and generally on time. Also, students get free rides. I would not recommend using the bus if you cannot get to campus on a single route (3, 5, 7 all go right by campus, maybe a couple others, dont remember), as there are not many cross town routes.
Feel free to PM me with any questions.

What exactly do you mean? People are law students; so they can be great and insufferable depending on the time of day/week/year.Sera Numquam wrote:How are the people there?
Overall, people are fairly laid back and friendly. The student body is pretty diverse in both backgrounds and experiences, as well as goals.

Checking in!
When I requested my interview I did not get a response within two weeks. I emailed them and they were very quick to set me up with an interview.

The interview requests are sent out to Alumni who are supposed to then get in contact with you and set up a time. Sometimes, people overlook stuff, or forgot they agreed to do interviews this cycle. If you dont hear from an someone about an interview within a week or so of requesting one, contact admissions and they we do their best to get someone else to do it, or they will contact the alum directly and remind them that they agreed to do interviews.B102 wrote:Checking in!

It will have no effect on your application, so dont take it as anything bad, just a lawyer somewhere that dropped the ball a bit.

Is this about average price for a 1 bedroom? I go to school in the Boston area and our rents are about 800-900 a month for a house with roommates. (I paid 775 last year to live with 4 other people and 1 bathroom and kitchen) These prices look too good to be true!!Right2BearArms wrote:

That's very inexpensive from what I've seen. A lot of the walking distance apartments look to be $1500+. There are a few places close to campus for under 1200, but I think you have to get lucky. I haven't had a roommate since freshman year of UG, so That may have to change. It's an eye-opener after the amount of rent you pay living in a small midwestern or southern college town. I guess it probably depends on how far from campus you're willing to live.

Pretty much what Scalvert said. The apartments near campus are all 1K+ for a one bedroom, even the old, small, crappy ones. The Americana is probably the most reasonable cost-wise, but the apartments really are not that nice, and you have to deal with bar noise a lot. OTOH, there is a dedicated parking lot, and its a 3 minute walk to the law school.Scalvert wrote:jumbo2016 wrote:Is this about average price for a 1 bedroom? You can get apartments for less than 1k/month with a roommate, and a lot of people did so and it worked out fine.
If you really want a 1 bedroom to yourself, there are a couple of complexes on Whitebridge road (3-4 miles from campus, 15 minute drive) that are fairly affordable (at least they were a year or so ago when I last checked.) The complex I lived at was an anomaly, even 3+ years ago. It was literally the cheapest apartment I looked at, and remained so. I believe they were renting for around 700 when I moved out, but the complex was also sold in May, and It looks like the new company is remodeling all the units as people move out and raising rent considerably. If you are interested its called Richland creek.

Do they use the interview for scholarship decisions?

Vandy is pretty mechanical in how they give out scholarships - you can look on LSN to get a better idea of this - but interviewing won't hurt youcc1012 wrote:I'm sure an interview looks more favorable as far as admissions and maybe scholarships.
