PennLaw is pretty sexy. And I like that it's on the main campus which is even more gorgeous. I don't know why people get down on its location. I'm touring the rest of Philly and I like what I'm seeing, especially Upenn's immediate surroundings. Damn I really want to go here now.

Ok so just to be completely sure, by "Why Penn?" Everyone means this prompt below, right?
• These are the core strengths that make Penn Law the best place to receive a rigorous and engaging legal education: genuine integration with associated disciplines; transformative, forward-looking faculty scholarship; highly-regarded experiential learning through urban clinics and our pro bono pledge; innovative, hands-on global engagement; and a manifest commitment to professional development and collegiality. These qualities define Penn Law. What defines you? How do your goals and values match Penn Law’s core strengths?

I think so, at least this is the one I'll be writing. None of the other options really fit me anyway :Spulstar1 wrote:Ok so just to be completely sure, by "Why Penn?" Everyone means this prompt below, right?

Despite being a humanities grad my foreign language is non-existent. But it sounds like a phenomenal program. Do they make you take the GRE? I can't imagine studying for 2 graduate/professional entrance exams.middlebear wrote:Checking in. Really need to write that Why Penn essay...

No GRE (though I'm looking at some dual-degree options where I think I'd need to hustle and take the GRE to apply during 1L...) But there is a supplement, essay, and oral.Toby Ziegler wrote:Despite being a humanities grad my foreign language is non-existent. But it sounds like a phenomenal program. I both love that there is a language requirement (huge lang dork here) but am also a bit terrified of the oral interview, since I haven't used my language skills on a regular basis since graduation a year and a bit ago.

Yeah I took Latin with my degree, which is cool and all, but it mostly just gave me the ability to read old shiz.middlebear wrote:No GRE (though I'm looking at some dual-degree options where I think I'd need to hustle and take the GRE to apply during 1L...) GLS: Yes indeed! Definitely going to apply for that (you too, I'm assuming?) And we don't have to do that app until a bit later in the process, right? (ie, I can freak over that once I have initial applications in?)smccgrey wrote:Yay language dorks!! Do you have any idea as to how much adding the MA would cost? Because I'm considering the JD/MSE and it just says that the joint program includes an "administrative fee". I'm trying to get a feel for how much this "administrative fee" might be.middlebear wrote:Checking in. Really need to write that Why Penn essay...

You can find a cost summary here, if you mean for the entire program. Not sure on application fees, if that's what you have in mind.pulstar1 wrote:Do you have any idea as to how much adding the MA would cost? Thanks. I guess the program setup is somewhat different for the JD/MSE but I think I have an idea as to how much extra it would cost. Probably like an extra 50-60k. Yikes.middlebear wrote:You can find a cost summary here, if you mean for the entire program. Yeah it's definitely quite a load to add to the cost of the JD. I know that TLS generally advises against the JD/MBA. Is it different for the JD/MA lauder? I know that it costs quite a bit less than the JD/MBA, but in terms of career opportunities/earning potential are there situations where the extra cost of the JD/MA can be justified? Or is it something that most pursue for personal fulfillment?pulstar1 wrote:Yeah I think you pretty much pay out the nose no matter whatmiddlebear wrote:Thanks. Re: University of Pennsylvania Law School C/O 2018 Applicants
Sadly, I think you'd still find the majority of TLS advising against. I have a weirdly-specific interest/hopeful career direction, and for that reason I'm applying to several dual degree options, one of which is Lauder. (Also, I'm not looking at big law, so there won't be a ton of $$$ at the end of the road.)pulstar1 wrote: Yeah it's definitely quite a load to add to the cost of the JD. I know most Big Law-type places actively discourage from the dual degree, so I'm not sure what earning potential there would be for anyone who did that and then actually practiced law. Maybe if someone did something super specialized and then was tacking on a JD, but I'd be surprised to find anyone like that, at least on here...
