Re: Northwestern Waitlist c/o 2017
To pass some of our waitlisted time, some good articles:
- http://www.lawschoolpodcaster.com/2010/ ... -waitlist/
Notable quotes:
"If we have doubts about somebody’s ability to thrive here as a student, then at Cornell Law School, at least, we’re going to deny them. We’re not going to put them on the waiting list."
"When choosing off the wait list, the Admissions Committee will likely pick someone who will jump at the chance to go. That means schools generally want to see your enthusiasm unless the wait listed school falls into the “Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You” group."
"Ann Levine says it is wise to contact the law school when your status changes, for whatever reason. “If you took on a new internship, you’re learning a new language. You spent the last three months traveling. Whatever it is, write a letter to the law school. Let them know. The update is important, it might show an aspect to your application, it might add to something that you didn’t initially share with the school, but it also just shows the school you haven’t forgotten about them."
"Being wait listed means that a school likes you, you’re competitive, you’re qualified, but that somebody else might be a bit more attractive or competitive. "
- http://law.clearadmit.com/2013/08/lsat- ... -now-what/
Notable quotes:
"Some waitlist letters fall into a grey area where it’s not clear whether or not additional materials are acceptable. In such cases, sending a letter is probably a good idea. However, you should call the school to see if they’re amenable to such action just to make sure."
"The important thing to remember about being on a waitlists is that you’re still in the running. Where there’s a waitlist, there’s hope."

Re: Northwestern Waitlist c/o 2017
Applicants: 4,000-4,500
Waitlist Percentage: ~29% over the previous three years according to LSN data
Withdraw Percentage: ~33% [LSN]
Let's assume another down year (so 4,000 applicants), that LSN is skewed towards positive results (so 20% actual waitlist %), and that people forget to update their LSN accounts especially late in the cycle (so 40% withdraw rate).
4,000 * 0.2 * 0.6 = 400 held/waitlists
If 17% get in (last year's LSN number), then that's 72 people (remember some will pass on their waitlist->acceptances).
Simpler math would go: they typically make 1000-1050 acceptance offers and LSN suggests 7% of these offers come off the waitlist so 70-74.

Is it reasonable to surmise that formerly held and now waitlisted candidates are in a better position, statistically, than the rest of the waitlist? Is there any evidence to test this hypothesis?

That number seems about sound, I'm on the waitlist at Berkeley, and they said they have approximately 350 on there, so I assume Northwestern is about the samesnagglepuss wrote:

I don't think anyone was waitlisted WITHOUT being held first. I could be wrong though...

I know this isn't the most reliable thing in the world but...
How many people are currently in the NU Class of 2017 Facebook group? I don't have Facebook so I can't check.

Does this seem a little low assuming a class size of ~230?holly45 wrote:I'm in the facebook group, theres 163 members.

During my interview in March they told me that they were gonna cut the class size down to 180.str8yolked wrote:Does this seem a little low assuming a class size of ~230?holly45 wrote:I'm in the facebook group, theres 163 members.

Re: Northwestern Waitlist c/o 2017
Thanks Leigh for those great articles!
I sent my LOCI yesterday morning.
I'm going to take a year off and do a corps program in Chicago. I hope to get accepted and defer.
If I get rejected, I won't be as sad as I would've a week ago
I'd just have a better chance of getting scholarships.
I'm an URM, 3.2, and 149.
GPA this semester wasn't the best. Senioritis to the max. Going to hold off on sending that as much as possible lol
How have I lasted this long? Nothing but the blood of Christ lol

I am almost certain they don't allow deferrals off the waitlist.

Maybe they can't maintain the quality of last year's class if they admit more and are trying to salvage their rankings?life2323 wrote:During my interview in March they told me that they were gonna cut the class size down to 180.

I'm 100% sure they do. I called admissions yesterday evening and discussed it with the lady who answered.holly45 wrote:I am almost certain they don't allow deferrals off the waitlist.

Pfft, you think you get out that easily? If law school admissions were horror films, Northwestern would be Saw.schmooky wrote:leigh912198972 wrote:Bjorn wrote:Is it reasonable to surmise that formerly held and now waitlisted candidates are in a better position, statistically, than the rest of the waitlist? I was waitlisted w/o being held, but I applied on the deadline.
What's a summer waitlist? Apparently I've been placed on it. I thought I withdrew from the waitlist by not responding that I wanted to stay on it...
"Hello schmooky. I want to play a game. For months, you have completed applications and written essays indicating your wish to attend law school. I wonder, how much do you really want that pain? Your aim in this game is to be waitlisted...twice. No backsies. You then have one month to complete four additional essays that will not help you escape. Then you will play Simon Says. Do a somersault...Simon didn't say. Play the game for three months, and you can escape the waitlist. Fail...and you still get to play the game for three months. Let the game begin."

I'm so not getting off of this waitlist.

Don't know if it will mean anything this year but just FYI last year there were 5 WL admits on May 24.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
