Honestly, I don't know how to answer that question since I can only go off this year. Basically it all depends on how proactive you are/what kind of connections you have. Personally, I'm probably going to do research for a professor I hit it off with first semester and take professional responsibility in the summer. I've had one interview with a judge (not federal), but that would only be a few days a week in the summer. Personally, I don't see the appeal in working all summer and not getting paid for it, but to each his own...
