Just got in today too with $$! I hadn't really put it on the top of my list but the money they are willing to give me in combination with the current economy, I'd be silly not to strong consider it.
Is anyone familiar with COL of living in Chicago? I'm trying to get a feel of the city and where law students live. Would it be silly for me to try to find a place in Wicker Park (I hear it's a cool neighborhood and somewhat near?) or do most live in the Loop, somewhere near the law school?

Hey, native Chicagoan here.dynamic28 wrote:Just got in today too with $$! I hadn't really put it on the top of my list but the money they are willing to give me in combination with the current economy, I'd be silly not to strong consider it.

The loop is extravagantly expensive, so keep that in mind. South Loop offers slightly cheaper options but you have to be patient/be willing to hunt. If you consider living outside the loop area, any neighborhood on the Red Line CTA train will get you there in under half an hour. IIT is very accesible by the red line.
Neighborhoods adjacent to the red line "el": Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wrigleyville, Gold Coast. It is relatively accesible from Wicker Park but you are facing a 45 minute commute on the bus.
Hope that helps!

I'm also a native Chicagoan, and Wicker Park wouldn't be too bad at all. You could take the blue line into downtown and around Congress. You end up walking three or four blocks from the El downtown. Wicker Park is a little pricey. Maybe a 30 minute commute depending on how far from the El you would live in Wicker park. Anywhere off the red line or blue line would be fine. COL in general is pretty expensive, though.

All the red line runs (almost?) all night so living near is is a pretty good plan generally.Po0329 wrote:I'm also a native Chicagoan, and Wicker Park wouldn't be too bad at all. It's also worth noting that relative to other US major cities with a large concentration of students (NY, DC, Boston, LA, SF), Chicago is pretty cheap in terms of cost of living. By and large, everything from rent to incidentals run around 45-50% of what they'd cost in NYC/SF, and 70% of the other cities I mentioned.
Living anywhere on the red line will give you easy access to Kent (and Northwestern and Loyola, for that matter) as well as most of the rest of the city.
Edit: Wow, 8 hour turn around to go from submitted to complete and in review.

How does Kent compare to Loyola, DePaul, and John Marshall (mostly regarding non-biglaw jobs)? Also, do you think the Kent degree would be portable to the less than desirable markets of Central Illinois?Giddy-Up wrote:Class of 2011 Kent Grad - Happy to answer questions.
And yes, I hail from Central Illinois, not "downstate." Lol.

Generally, kent, DePaul, and Loyola are seen as about the same. Marshall is considerably worse, just as NW and Chicago are far better than Kent, Loyola and DePaul. I really don't have much knowledge about the central Illinois market, but I imagine the degree is portable. If you are choosing between Kent, Loyola or DePaul, go to the one that gives you the most money.
