Re: Drexel c/o 2016 (2012-2013)
I just got an email telling me that I was accepted and got a full ride! I put my application in last Wednesday (12/5). I currently work in Philly and would like to work here after law school, so this scholarship definitely makes Drexel one of my top choices

Just called the admissions office and they said we should all have our acceptance packets before the holidays!
For those with a full scholarship, how are you guys weighing the decision of a free law education vs. a higher ranked school? Cheers!

I'm looking a lot at employment stats. I'd love a free education but I want a job more so, even if it means more loans. Temple, by far, has the best employment stats (after penn) in the area at 92% after 9 months. If I got in there, I'll probably go. If I don't get in there, I'll probably end up at Drexel unless someone else gives me an enormous scholarship.wingedwolf wrote:Just called the admissions office and they said we should all have our acceptance packets before the holidays!![]()

The key is, for me at least, to not think of it as a free legal education. I am thinking of it as a free year of law school due to the 2.95 stip. YMMV

I am definitely on the same page, though I'd probably consider Villanova after Temple. Employment is absolutely the goal.Keasbey wrote:I'm looking a lot at employment stats. Looking at LSN it seems Drexel is throwing some crazy money at people this year. Guess they can afford to do that knowing more than 50% of people won't be retaining those scholarships. Still, I applied today. Hoping to use the $$$ from Drexel as a bargaining chip elsewhere.

Call me crazy, but even with lots of other acceptances and a 170 and 3.4(ivy) I'm still leaning toward Drexel. I switched my ED app at Penn to RD so I could give Drexel a shot. I got a Yes at GW, Richmond, Villanova, and Northeastern, but I know I can do well at Drexel and I know I'd love being there. The faculty is impressive and welcoming, the campus is great, their health law program is successful, and it's in my city. Yes, I'd have to seriously consider Penn, but right now I'm leaning Earle Mack!wingedwolf wrote:Just called the admissions office and they said we should all have our acceptance packets before the holidays!![]()

You're crazy and i am not even close to a "t14 or dont go" guy. Assuming you will do well enough to keep your scholarship is also bad news. At least wait on Temple. Better rep, better employment, better allumni network etc.phillygal wrote:Call me crazy, but even with lots of other acceptances and a 170 and 3.4(ivy) I'm still leaning toward Drexel. as an undergrad you cant even get on our floor of the librarykdev1203 wrote:Well, I'm an undergrad here and I can tell you the law library is crawling with obnoxious, noisy undergraduates from 6 pm-onwards (when they open the floor up to everyone) every night because the law library is really just the top floor of the university's (incredibly small) library and Drexel has an enrollment problem and literally can't fit everyone in. I refuse to even apply here for law school for this exact reason.kjones0127 wrote:What's the thing that you like the least about drexel?presidentk1 wrote:1L here if you guys have any questions = )
I always hear the selling points of the school, but I would like to know what students find annoying or just plain dislike about the school, if you don't mind.
Thank you for offering advice!
Seriously, I wouldn't do it. These people have no respect and there is poor enforcement of the noise/talking issue, but they will take any morsel of food they see out of your hands.
Disclaimer: yeah, I'm a little biased.
and we have a ton of completely closed off rooms within the library
i never had a problem with noise

I definitely see where your coming from, but I feel like if you're given an opportunity like this you have to do everything to ensure you see it through.Pip42 wrote:The key is, for me at least, to not think of it as a free legal education. Re: Drexel c/o 2016 (2012-2013)
I do agree with you on many levels, but for personal reasons I probably won't consider Temple. Like I said, I do love Penn too, but with financial considerations, Drexel is a very appealing option. I also believe it's entirely within my control to make sure I get above a 2.95 (which is the median GPA for 1Ls at Drexel, see handbook), especially with so much scholarship money on the line.Pip42 wrote:You're crazy and i am not even close to a "t14 or dont go" guy. But you're right- I won't count on that money and if I do get into Penn RD, I'll absolutely have to do some soul-searching.

Hey, I get that picking a law school is a very tough and personal decision. Keep this in mind. I got the same full ride you did. Now the median says that in the universe of us two one of us keeps the scholly and the other loses it (not exactly... Calm down statisticians). Are you that confident that you will perform better in 1L than me?
I am not saying Drexel can't be the right answer but you need to think long and hard about the value of a Drexel degree at 80,000 + COL for three years and not just COL for three years.

That's another way to look at it. I think this probably belongs in the "choosing a law school" thread but I do appreciate the inputPip42 wrote:Hey, I get that picking a law school is a very tough and personal decision. Re: Drexel c/o 2016 (2012-2013)
Phillygal, I understand what you're saying. I got that email from drexel with the money at the bottom and was amazed. A full ride?! It would be so hard for me to pass that up over just about anything. I check my email much less frequently now, because I'm satisfied with what has been offered to me. I have talked to many Drexel law students and they all tell me, "If you put the work and time in, the stipulation really isn't that hard to keep." Everyone LOVES Earle Mack for many reasons. For what it is worth, I'm very close with a partner at a big firm, and he has even told me that the job prospects in the Philly market (if you attend a Philly school) really arent that bad, and Drexel will be a TT school in a very short time. So best of luck to you, I look forward to meeting all of you on the 5th.

Just curious, what exactly makes you/your friend think Drexel will break into the T30 any time soon? Their employment numbers aren't good by any measure and their GPA/LSAT profiles aren't similar to T30 schools either. I could see them breaking into the TT pretty easily, but T30 is way down the road, if at all.

Re: Drexel c/o 2016 (2012-2013)
I've been somewhat surprised as well. I work at a law firm in Philadelphia, and a few of the attorneys really do believe that - once Drexel gets several more years under its belt and builds its alumni base - it could be a very very good school. They cite their co-op programs as a major factor.tony2167 wrote:Just curious, what exactly makes you/your friend think Drexel will break into the T30 any time soon? Although Drexel (and I think Northeastern) have the most established co-op programs, many law schools have clinicals or externships that their students can participate in. So... I think it would really have to step up its game to be in T30. But maybe there's something I don't know!

Re: Drexel c/o 2016 (2012-2013)
Magp said it. The few lawyers I know all say there's way too many lawyers coming into work not knowing what the hell they are doing. The way to learn now is by doing it hands-on. Now, I may not have been clear by saying t30 shortly. I just mean down the road when they build an alumni base. Maybe 20-30 years, but I'm just trying to convey that it is a good school with some great potential. I personally think they will be TT, in the next 5 years, but that's just me.

Re: Drexel c/o 2016 (2012-2013)
Yeah, I definitely agree that attorneys need more hands-on experience before heading into the field. Though there was recently an Drexel grad at my firm who had co-oped at places like Reed Smith and was let go for lack of experience, but that's one person, and I'm hesitant to generalize. Getting training is important, and if Drexel can provide opportunities for that, then that's great.csexton182 wrote:Magp said it.
