Anyone with a status checker actually gone complete yet? Mine has said "incomplete" for two weeks now. Don't want to bug them if that is the case for everybody.

Oh, also I visited the campus this weekend and at least during the day the area around SC wasn't nearly as scary as advertised. The campus was nice but the law building was one of the less visually appealing ones on campus. Also the sea of red and yellow kind of made me want to puke. Hopefully my feelings will change if accepted and I end up attending

Status checker showed up a day or two after submission I think.
And yeah, I wouldn't care to walk around the area at night. That goes for most big cities though.

Just choose whichever has a lower COA for you and whichever culture you prefer (class size, competitiveness, etc). You can live in nice places and attend USC (as I do living in Los Feliz). Lived in Westwood since I went to UCLA for undergrad and can assure you that you'll have access to just as nice of places attending either school.TheThriller wrote:Both are peer schools. Why not choose the one with the nicer campus and facilities?
Not to rag on USC, since I would love to attend.
ETA: in response to bigzuck: I was thinking the same thing until I started here and realized the only time I walk around campus at night is when I come back from bar review, which means I took the metro (right across the street from the law school) that is across the street from the parking structure. Basically, that's not even an issue for a law student unless you for some reason decided to live right next to campus.

Unless they changed things from last year it's going to be a long time before that status checker starts telling more than a few people anything. USC is notoriously slow with its application process. It's too damn early for you guys to sweat this stuff anyways. Enjoy yourselves!AlanShore wrote:How long after applying did you get a status checker? thanks!BigZuck wrote:Anyone with a status checker actually gone complete yet? Correction, I lived not too far and there USE to be a ton of development before the 2008 crash. That's not the case anymore, most of the development is actually now by USC. they are buying up space to expand, which is both good and bad. The good is a lot of the slumlords will be pushed out and so will the gangsters but it threatens the poor people as well. They want USC to spend millions for low income housing. There is a lot of construction going on but I don't think there is plans for a new law building.slack_academic wrote:The area is kind of bad at night, though. A friend of mine works in a lab at USC and lives a couple miles from campus so I spend a lot of time down there. It doesn't bother me that much but I have some friends (white kids from the suburbs) who get anxious there at night. Generally there's nothing to worry about but I've had some weird stuff happen. Drug addicts hassling me for money, mostly. Standard city stuff.BigZuck wrote:Oh, also I visited the campus this weekend and at least during the day the area around SC wasn't nearly as scary as advertised. USC could be a really awesome area to be in the coming years, though. There's a lot of development around L.A. Live/Downtown (a few miles away) and some trendy restaurants are opening up in the center of the city. Nice apartments, too.
You'll see a bunch of carts and narrow storefronts with a largely poor hispanic crowd buying/selling random stuff on one side of the street and then a bunch of yuppies and hipsters going out to eat on the other side of the street. It's kind of strange but I like it.
Sorry if you're from L.A. and already know this stuff, but it's something to check out during a visit.

I'm a USC 1L... Feel free to ask me questions about the schools, classes, social life, anything!
You guys can post it in this group or send me a personal message. I'll try to respond as soon as possible, but this weekend is horrible--we have a memo due.
Good luck to you guys on admissions! I love SC!

Thanks man. How would you compare USC to UCLA? With respect to whatever you'd like to talk about.sdphill wrote:I'm a USC 1L... Feel free to ask me questions about the schools, classes, social life, anything!

Re: USC c/o 2016 Applicants
Great question! I have only been to UCLA's campus twice and we had a city-wide bar review with them, so I am only speaking from what I have experienced so far.goden wrote: Thanks man. How would you compare USC to UCLA? With respect to whatever you'd like to talk about.
USC students seem nicer and more open to helping each other. When I went to the UCLA Law Library, it just seems as if people were doing their own thing and only worried about themselves. Each section is really close here, but I think that is mainly due to our small class size (188 of us compared to ~425 UCLA 1Ls). I definitely can say that Westwood (the neighborhood UCLA is in) is nicer, but USC's proximity to downtown LA does give us a leg up with judicial externships and interviews. The Trojan Network is literally like no other kind of network in the nation, where UCLA does not have that true "Bruin Pride" like USC does.
I hope I've answered your questions, but I have been working on a memo for about 35 hours, so my eyes hurt.
But keep sending questions!
