I know a few people ITT are choosing between Vandy/GULC. I am personally leaning towards GULC, primarily because of geographical preference, but I am curious what others think. Why GULC?franklyscarlet wrote:Vandy has been very unpredictable this year. I applied at the end of October, and heard back mid November I believe. Anyone going to the January reception? I live less than an hour away from GULC and will be abroad during the March ASW so I'm definitely planning on checking it out.

Re: In at GULC!
Thinking of attending as well. Its only a few hours by car for me so its very doable. And I have not been on campus yet (though have been to DC many, many times).username08 wrote:Anyone going to the January reception? I'll be going to the January reception, as well! I live in DC and my husband went to GULC, so I know the area very well and would be glad to help with recommendations about sight-seeing, restaurants, hotels, etc.

Re: In at GULC!
I'm toying with the idea of going to the Jan. event, but I'm not sure if it's worth the cost to get down to DC given that I think GULC is pretty far down my list and I'm not going to be a PILS candidate. I really like DC but I think I've absorbed a little too much of the TLS Kool Aid on GULC.

I'm leaning towards gulc for a few reasons. Basically, right now I'm here:top30man wrote:I know a few people ITT are choosing between Vandy/GULC. Gulc
PRO:
In DC (geographic)
In DC ( job/internships- i'd really like to work in the non-profit/PI field related to healthcare policy)
Close to family and friends
T14
CON:
In dc (cost of living)
Campus is not quite as pretty
Likely to shake down to be more expensive

I agree with this, and I am leaning towards Gulc for the same reasons. Does anyone know how Gulc is with negotiating aid? That is, if I (or another poster) were to get money from Vandy or Texas, would Gulc be willing to negotiate?franklyscarlet wrote:I'm leaning towards gulc for a few reasons. Re: In at GULC!
Past years GULC has a rep for being stingy with money and snobby about what they consider peers. They're also one of the only non-HYS schools to claim to give out significant amounts of aid based on need instead of merit (so your relative finances and parental situation could hurt you).top30man wrote:Does anyone know how Gulc is with negotiating aid? Ninja edit: Not to say that negotiating isn't worth a shot, especially if you have big offers from Vandy and Texas.

Re: In at GULC!
Ditto on all the Holiday card comments - I thought GULC did a really nice job. So far it's my best option and definitely #1 on the list at the moment.
Does anyone know about student housing? I know it exists and I assume that many stay there for at least 1L...but do people tend to stay three years or eventually move off campus? Does anyone know about the apartments in the area?
Thanks!

That was the impression that I had. And that's good to know about need aid. Do you all feel it's worth it at sticker?Nelson wrote:Past years GULC has a rep for being stingy with money and snobby about what they consider peers. Re: In at GULC!
I say this depends on the alternative and what your level of acceptable risk is. I think if your options are Texas/Vandy with $$ vs. GULC sticker, I would take the money unless you're totally averse to working in Texas. Obviously, I would wait for GULC's merit package before making that decision. Personally, I don't think Georgetown is worth sticker, but I'm also biased by having NYU and Penn acceptances and I might think differently if GULC was my only T14 option.top30man wrote:That was the impression that I had. The employment situation for the bottom half of GULC's class is very murky. I didn't have any luck finding detailed stats on GULC's website (their employment fact sheet has data for C/O 2003 which is laughable). The data on LST doesn't look great. Only 35% reporting ArtIII and biglaw for C/O 2009 and 30% in private sector not reporting salary. NLJ says 40% of the class was in NLJ250 for 2010. PI's not my thing, and it's even harder to get info about that side of things, but I assume that federal hiring freezes have to be hurting GULC.

I'm still kind of nub in terms of TLS. What's the general opinion of TLS on GULC?Nelson wrote:I'm toying with the idea of going to the Jan. event, but I'm not sure if it's worth the cost to get down to DC given that I think GULC is pretty far down my list and I'm not going to be a PILS candidate. Also, is there any difference in terms of the January and March ASW? Leaning towards March since I'll have more answers by then and also because I doubt I can make the trip in January given my current west coast location.

Thanks for answering questions. What is your experience with the jobs situation? Also, what do you recommend for housing? I know there is an on campus option, but I was wondering what most people do.D. H2Oman wrote:Do not go to Georgetown. Seriously.

1. Less bleak than TLS will have you believe. Not to say things are by any means great but it seemed like the pendulum of perception has swung too far towards negatively. I hesitate to try to give any sort of numbers because I don't know any more than you guys can find online. I know people with very iffy grades and no connections who landed jobs from OCI this past fall. That being said it makes sense that the people who did well were more likely to speak up. But anecdotally and very unscientifically I don't think things are that bad and they're slowly improving.
2. People do literally everything. Expensive parts of DC, less expensive, studios, large rowhouses, maryland, virginia, etc. I lived on campus during 1L and I live in NOVA now.
Pro and cons of on campus
Pros:
-Pretty nice for a 'dorm'
-super convenient
-great for meeting people (I think about half the 1L class lives in the dorms)
Con
-It really is basically a dorm, so unless you're coming straight from undergrad it's kind of a throw back. (not to say this doesn't have it's positives!)
-not a very good value
I have a lot more space now and live in a much nicer place for literally like 2/3rds the cost. But it does kinda suck living outside the city. Not really for going to class or work, but going out at night and especially coming home (if you're the bar type) is a huge pain in the ass
But if anyone has any specific questions about housing in DC, let me know what you're ideally looking for and I'll gladly make recommendations for you.

Re: In at GULC!
Waterman- thanks! Semi-specific and at the same time vague question: I'm a few years out of undergrad and havent lived in a dorm for a very long time so I'm wary of dorm-like living, but I'm hoping to strike a balance between value and distance. Are there neighborhoods near school popular with students that are more reasonabl for a studio or 1br, or is most of the housing around campus on the high end of the cheap--->expensive ratio?

Re: In at GULC!
Are you coming to visit during one of the ASWs? Because I don't wanna completely scare you away with my description of it as a dorm. It's really not bad. But yeah I do think it's a dorm and if you're a little bit older you might not like it. As you can see by my avatar I'm incredibly immature so it was a good fit.franklyscarlet wrote:Waterman- thanks! The good thing about value/distance is that anything near the red/green/yellow lines is going to be pretty good for campus access. Because you'll get off be 2-5 blocks away from the school.

For reference I live a few blocks from the Crystal city metro stop (yellow/blue line....bottom left corner of the map) and I can probably from laying in my bed to inside the classroom in 25-30 minutes.

Thanks! I'm definitely coming to an ASW. Ill keep an open mind to the dorm. Are there a decent amount of peopl who get housing with roommates during 1L?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
