Well, it looks like from last year that unless you are waiting to wait until mid August, you actually really should.pandabonesaw wrote:yeah it's best you guys just withdraw

Hi guys, room in the boat?
Michigan's enough of my dream that I think if they called me on orientation day, I'd still pack the car and head to Ann Arbor. Anyone else this level of desperate?

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
I did. I had a small stack already ready and my Michigan one pretty much already written since I knew the best I could hope for was WL so I sent it Saturday. As it's been said though, that's just a feather in the admissions file, but it's the only feather I can control, so...silversnitches wrote:Got the email on Friday... Room for 1 more?
Has anyone contacted admissions to inquire how many people have been waitlisted so far?
Here's to hoping for more movement than the past few years.

I think it's likely, Duke certainly has more WL movement this year. Unless Michigan's 2-spot improvement is helping with the yield...mlsdreamer wrote: Here's to hoping for more movement than the past few years.

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
Damn, why does Michigan have to be so nice? It's hard enough suffering through the WL Purgatory, although that's not even a fair comparison since I believe one has an easier chance getting into Heaven via Purgatory than UM through WL. They just sent receipt of my LOCI and the last line was, Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns—we hope to have good news for you sometime this spring or summer. Yes, I hope that as well! Since we both hope for the same thing, wouldn't it be beneficial to everyone that it happen? Sigh. I don't very much enjoy the part of the cycle where I have to dissect any contact from my choice school line-by-line.

OK, now time for a real question. Has anyone done the WL survey included in the email and had the online status not change? My status still reads Waitlist Offer Extended. I filled out the survey last Friday. Does it take this long or longer to update in the status checker?

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
I also answered the survey on Friday and my status still reads "Waitlist Offer Extended" as of today. The response email I got says:
Our online status checker will reflect our receipt of your waitlist offer response, but please allow 7 to 10 business days for your status change to be reflected
How did you send your LOCI? Email or snail mail?
Though I know it's more or less impossible to know I wish we had an idea how many people were on the waitlist - even if it doesn't serve any purpose.

Thanks, missed that part about 7 to 10 days. Obviously just worried since there's a definite 2 week timeframe of getting on the waitlist.mlsdreamer wrote:I also answered the survey on Friday and my status still reads "Waitlist Offer Extended" as of today. The response email I got says:

I send it via snail mail on Saturday. With my #s and late application, I knew the best I could hope for from Michigan was WL, so I pretty much had the thing written when I got notice on Friday. Took it to the PO on Saturday along with my other 2 LOCIs (sigh, this cycle has sucked for me) and I got confirmation today, which was personalized as to what I sent. Incredibly sweet, like everything Michigan does, which just makes it harder to hate them, although I know my chances are very slim...

Thoughts on having supporting letter sent? Through LSAC or just to schools?

WL'd on 2/25. Very happy. Very aware it is as close as I'll ever get. But, I will drive through the night and sleep in my car if they call. I will also pay 10% over tuition, cut the grass, and clean windows.
But that's it. I don't want to look needy.

wow... that's actually really romantic when the context is unknown.2807 wrote:WL'd on 2/25. Very happy. Very aware it is as close as I'll ever get. But, I will drive through the night and sleep in my car if they call. I will also pay 10% over tuition, cut the grass, and clean windows.

Michigan overenrolled the last two years, so if the admissions office is being conservative this cycle, they might draw from the waitlist this year. Good luck!

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
This has been debated endlessly, especially for Michigan. Applications are down 15% and most schools overenrolled last year due to a glut of applications, so a lot of schools will probably be more conservative this year. However, Michigan did rise in the "ranks" so USNWR junkies may pick Michigan over Berkeley whereas last year they wouldn't have. I don't actually know if people like this exist, but anything's possible. Obviously UM and UCB are two totally different schools and both really exceptional institutions, but if someone's going to move to Ann Arbor over Berkeley, changing the trajectory of their career, etc., over what a news magazine published a few weeks ago, then they're going to do it.michigan_man wrote:Michigan overenrolled the last two years, so if the admissions office is being conservative this cycle, they might draw from the waitlist this year. Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
WL as well. I'm thinking that the waitlist is probably something like 100-200 people. I couldn't tell if the 30-40 people quoted in their FAQ was per year for 5 years of just over 5 years total. I'd assume that my chances are less than 1% at this point. What sucks is I can't really wait much past the end of May. I would like to attend Michigan, but I don't envy having to find a place to live in my 2nd choice on short notice, or even at Ann Arbor on short notice.
I'll send a second LOCI once April rolls around so they have it before first deadline.
Good luck everyone, and if we don't make it at least we'll be spared a miserable AA winter.

what point in the year do you think most people give up on the WL and withdraw?

Re: Michigan Waitlist 2011
I don't think most people do withdraw. I think at some point people take offers elsewhere and start making plans. How late they would be willing to drop those and go to Michigan varies person to person. I personally won't wait much past the second deposit deadline because the big mover after that would be people not showing up in August and I can't be expected to move to AA and find a place to live on a week's notice.

Michigan is still my number one choice. I was expecting an outright rejection so I'm just happy to be here, although I realize that the chances of me being admitted are slim to none.
