you could tell them where you're in and what other schools have offered and see if they're willing to offer anything. But if you're going to ask for a specific amount, it would be rude to not take it.

True. But I am very debt averse and I intend to practice in SoCal anyway. So it would probably make sense for me to attend UCla if the price is right. That's what prompted me to ask my original question. Thanks for the advice (edited for stupid iPhone autospell error) it does make sense to do it that way.

nope I'm hoping I get in to USC with some money, which hopefully I can leverage. It sucks though, I would love to stay in CA, but since tuition is going to 45K and then 50K (and rumors of 55K), UCLA in-state could cost 10K more than Georgetown, and with a higher cost of living.

Oh. I had been going off their website where it said 40k. Actually I'm not aware of how hard it is to "go" in-state after your first year, I should look into that. But coming from out-of-state, I was bumping my package against a 50k-40k-40k tuition cost. Sounds like that's overly optimistic.

I was admitted to UCLA in early January, and I didn't receive a scholarship. I got admitted to Texas recently and received an in-state tuition waver and $9500/yr. Since they are tied in the rankings, I wrote Dean Schwartz to see if UCLA could offer me a scholarship. Has anyone had any luck negotiating for scholarships so far?

I was accepted early January (via e-mail, not phone call, which sorta made me sad )
169/3.85 and they offered me $90,000

I'm going to visit this weekend and if all goes well I'm pretty sure I'm going sooo if anyone's looking for a roomie... lol

I'm waiting for my grant package before I negotiate with them- but if I'm not offered anything I'm going to be pissed since I already bought my plain tickets. UCLA at sticker is the same as no UCLA for me....

It's frustrating because 1 point more on the LSAT and I'd have gotten something like 90k ...

Well, since I am probably partly responsible for stirring up all the fuss about UCLA tuition, I'll just weigh in a bit more to balance it out.

News has come in that it will be 44k instate/54k OOS next year

Keep in mind everyone that these figures include academic fees and health insurance, which are listed separately at other schools.

Also, keep in mind that pretty much every other school is going up every year at a very steady rate. Just compare a place like UMich (again this figure doesn't include health insurance or registration fees)

so, UCLA is going up something like 3.5k compared to what seems to be a trend of 2.5k increase for UMich, just as an example. Other schools are going up too, and they will probably continue to do so.

With every new WL/Hold decision I get, it seems more and more likely I'll be attending UCLA. Additionally, the fact that I have the option to live at home while attending (and thus saving on additional debt incurred for rent) is appealing. If UCLA would throw me a couple $$'s, I think I'd be pretty set on going.

That said, does anyone here have any experience with asking/negotiating for scholarship money from UCLA? Unfortunately, I don't really have any strong offers to leverage. The only thing I do have is a scholarship from Loyola LA, which I don't think UCLA would even consider.

Just sent an email to Dean Schwartz asking if I could apply for a travel stipend to visit for the March 14th ASD. UCLA's generous scholarship offer is making it a more attractive choice by the day, and a visit might put it over the top for meeeeee

Nope, it was exactly what they said it would be. I asked questions, they responded (she was super friendly+helpful, too). All in all, it's working: I am really being swayed towards UCLA! Phone call was ~15 mins.

No, but I did get a detailed email from a current student regarding UCLA and why she chose to attend. She had a similar background to me and told me to email or call her if I had any questions. I haven't contacted her yet, but I likely will soon. I really liked the outreach and it really made UCLA that much more attractive to me. Now, if they would just give me some scholarship money, it would be a done deal.

Good luck to all those negotiating for scholarship offers. UCLA was the first school that I was admitted to, and I did not receive a scholarship offer. Later in the cycle, I recieved substantial scholarship offers from ASU and Texas. I let UCLA know about my offers, and they came back with an offer of $52,500. I doubt that the ASU offer swayed them, but I think the Texas offer gave me some leverage. Dean Schwartz was extremely helpful, and the entire process took about a week.

Also, I recieved need-based aid within a week of completing my FAFSA and Need Access. I hope this info helps, and good luck to everyone!
